Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (0-1) was defeated 68-52 by Scranton (1-0) in the first round of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Royals jumped out to an early advantage and a 21-7 run helped build the lead to 16, 25-9, with 4:58 remaining in the second quarter.
  • A layup to open the second half by junior Justina Cabezas trimmed the deficit to 10 for the Pioneers, but the Royal countered immediately with a 12-2 run before going on to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Cabezas paced the Pioneers with 21 points on 8-of-15 (.533) shooting to pair with seven rebounds.
  • It was the seventh 20-point performance of her career.
  • Senior Yakira Rosa reeled in a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with six assists.
  • Junior Brianna Smith tied her career-best assist total with five helpers.
  • William Paterson totaled 18 assists on 20 made shots.
