Carroll Advances to the Semi-Finals of CCIW Tournament

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's basketball team advanced to the Semi-Finals of the 2022 CCIW Women's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night after a record-breaking win over the North Central College Cardinals. The Pioneers won 100-58, setting the record for most points scored by a winning team in CCIW Tournament history. Olivia Rangel scored 20 points in the second half to set her new season-high with 27 points, seven assists, five steals, and three rebounds.
 
The Pioneers (19-6 overall) advances to the semi-finals for the second consecutive season. Carroll also set records with the largest margin of victory in a CCIW Tournament game (42 points), and tied the records for field goal percentage (60%) and field goals made (36). Carroll was lights out all night, shooting 10-20 (50%) from behind the three-point line, led by Katie Evans' 16 points and three three-pointers. 38 rebounds were gathered by the Pioneers, with a team-high eight going to Elizabeth Behrndt. The Pioneer bench was paced by 11 points from Allison Thompson and nine from Brooke Foster and Theresa Wichser.
 
The Cardinals held a four-point lead through the first two minutes of the game, after starting on a 6-2 run. Thompson was able to help tie the score with a jump shot outside the paint. Thompson soon after drew an and-one foul for a three-point swing and to give the Pios the lead with 6:30 left in the first quarter. Foster sparked a 10-2 run before the media timeout with a three-point basket. Evans hit her second three of the quarter with 2:44 remaining followed up by Wichser's first three of the game a minute and a half later. The Pioneers ended the first quarter up 32-18 after shooting 72.2%. Evans stepped into a three to score the first basket of the second quarter. The Cardinals were able to cut the deficit down to 11, but Olivia Rangel hit a three of her own from Evans to kick the lead back to 14. The Pios only scored 19 points in the second quarter but led 17 going into halftime.
 
Chloe Halverson scored a three on a second-chance play to boast the Pioneers' lead to 22 early in the second half. A 6-2 run by the Cardinals quickly prompted a timeout from coach Lindsay Schultz to slow the momentum. Carroll got back into the driver seat led by Rangel, who started a 16-5 run to finish out the final five minutes of the quarter. Rangel scored 11 points on 3-4 shooting with four free throws and a three in that span. Rangel knocked down a jumper outside of the paint along the baseline to send the lead to 31, followed on the next possession by a three-pointer from Wichser. Rangel scored her 27th point on an and-one foul and pushed the lead to 40 with 2:53 remaining. With the starters pulled, Lauren Pollock scored the and-one three-point play to give Carroll the magic 100 number.
 
The Pioneers will travel to Decatur, Illinois later this week as Millikin University will host the remaining tournament games. Carroll will face Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday, Feb. 25 at 5 PM. Carroll finished 1-1 against the Titans in the regular season, including a 70-48 victory at home.
