NYU Avenges its loss to Rochester last week with an 85-63 victory.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – In the end, it all came down to turnovers. Against an aggressive NYU defense, Rochester committed 15 turnovers in the first two quarters, leading to big lead for the Violets who went on to grab an 85-63 victory over the Yellowjackets on Friday night. For the game, Rochester had 23 turnovers leading to 34 transition points.
 
The game in Brooklyn was NYU's third – all against UAA competition – at St. Francis College in Brooklyn. NYU raised its record to 16-1 overall, 7-1 in the University Athletic Association. The Violets avenged their only loss, 57-53 to Rochester in the Palestra last Friday. NYU is ranked #9 in the poll conducted by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and #10 in the poll conducted by D3hoops.com.

UR's record stands at 12-7 overall, 4-4 in the UAA. On Sunday, Rochester will play at Brandeis University. Friday night, Brandeis lost to Emory University, 76-65, in Waltham. The Judges are 1-7 – with the win earned against Rochester last Sunday. Emory is second in the UAA standings with a 6-2 conference mark (losses to Rochester and NYU). Emory will play at NYU on Sunday.
 
Rochester fashioned that win over NYU seven days ago with its own aggressive defense in the second half. The Yellowjackets trailed, 20-9, after one quarter, then chipped away in the next two periods before rallying for a victory in the fourth quarter.
 
They tried to rally in the third quarter and cut an 18-point deficit down to five points midway through the quarter. NYU hit a couple of threes in the last couple of minutes, got the double-digit lead back and carried a 59-50 edge into the final quarter.
 
Rochester's shooting was cold to start the fourth period. NYU used a 9-2 burst over the first four minutes to build a 14-point edge, 66-52. Natalie Bruns scored five points in the burst with a three-pointer from right wing (one of four she sank on the night) and a jumper from the foul line. Bruns led all scorers with 22 points, including 4-5 accuracy on three-point shots. Erica Miller and Jenny Walker scored 12 points apiece.
 
The Yellowjackets had three players in double figures – Julianna OkoniewskiHannah Lindemuth, and Alexis Sestric had 10 apiece. When the Yellowjackets rallied, they came from all angles.
Two free throws from Walker restored NYU's lead to 48-33 early in the third (besides the final score, the biggest spread was set at 21, 41-20, after four points from Walker late in the second quarter).
 
Sestric hit a long three-pointer from right wing. Abby Greis sank a jumper from the foul line, Okoniewski hit a 10-footer just outside the lane, and Haley Dumiak sank a jumper from the foul line. Belle Pellecchia hit 1-2 from the line for NYU. Then Lindemuth scored near the key and Kat Jenks hit a three-pointer  from the left of the key. That pulled Rochester within 49-44. NYU outscored Rochester 10-6 to finish the quarter with Bruns and Miller draining threes.
 
UR committed only three turnovers in the third quarter and hit 11 of 17 from the floor (.647) after shooting 10-24 in the first 20 minutes (.417). The Yellowjackets scored 24 points. NYU scored 16 points in the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter to stretch its lead to 75-56.
