Fourth-Quarter Surge Sends Griffins Beyond Knights

Aston, Pa. - (2/2/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University (10-10, 4-3) used a 34-point fourth quarter to defeat Neumann University (8-12, 3-4) in this evening's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) affair. The Griffins made five of their six fourth-quarter field goals (6-of-12, .500) from three-point range (5-of-8, .625) and scored 17 free throws (17-of-22, .773) over the final 10 minutes of the contest, separating from the Knights with a late 20-5 run tirggered by the second of two free shots for junior guard Elise Sylvester (Pottstown, Pa.) (59-56, 5:04) and a fastbreak put-back from junior forward Haley Crossley (Warminster, Pa.) (61-56, 4:19). Crossley scored her 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 18 rebounds, but sophomore guard Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) led all scorers with 25 points. Crossley added three assists, two blocks, and five steals to her double-double, while Eggers complimented her double figures with eight rebounds, a block, and a steal. Junior guard Kelly Owens (Schwenksville, Pa.) contributed 20 points, two rebounds, and an assist, while Sylvester supported with three points, two rebounds, nine assists, and four steals. 

Gwynedd Mercy University trailed 27-25 (1:38) after a low-scoring first half. In the second half, the Griffins' balanced attack was reenergized by the perimeter shooting of Crossley (3-of-4, .750), Eggers (2-of-4, .500) and Owens (4-of-8, .500). The trio combined to hit 9-of-16 (.562) from three-point territory and scored 48 of their 61 points in the latter frame. Eggers reaped the long-term benefits Griffins' three-point shooting with a 11-of-12 (.917) shooting performance at the charity stripe that guaranteed the Gwynedd Mercy University victory.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Griffin Complex on Saturday, February 5, when they host Cabrini University for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
