Montclair St. Nets Fifth Straight Victory, 51-35

Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Nickie Carter finished with 17 points as Montclair State extended its winning streak to five games with a 51-35 victory over Stockton at the Panzer Athletic Center on Monday.

Freshman Olivia Vero added eight points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Red Hawks (11-7, 9-4 NJAC), who moved into sole possession of third place in the conference standings. MSU also swept the season set with the Ospreys (8-11, 6-7 NJAC) posting its sixth consecutive victory in the all-tine series.

Madison LaRosa led Stockton with 11 points. Nayla Hill grabbed 10 rebounds with Emma Morrone totaling eight points.

The Red Hawks trailed 12-10 after the first quarter and were still down 20-17 with three minutes to play in the second when it closed out the period with an 8-1 run. Carter had six of those including a jumper to make it a one-point game. Vero followed with layup inside two minutes to give MSU the lead at 21-20.  Carter made two from the line with 1:23 remaining and hit two more with 39 seconds left as Montclair led 25-21 at the break.

MSU widened the gap to start the second as Megan Duffy hit a jumper and Kendall Hodges made two at the charity stripe putting the Red Hawks in front, 31-21 with seven minutes to go. Jordyn Madigan's three-pointer with 3:32 left got Stockton within 36-30. But the Red Hawks closed out the quarter with the last five points, the final two by Vero as it led 41-30 heading into the final period.

Trisha Peterson added six points and 10 rebounds, her sixth double-digit rebound contest of the year. Duffy and Hodges had seven points apiece.

Montclair State is back in action on Wednesday, February 2 as it makes the short trip to Wayne, NJ. The Red Hawks face William Paterson at 6:00 pm in the second matchup of the season. WPU, which sits a game behind MSU in the standings, won the first meeting 62-56 in Montclair on December 8.
