Women’s Basketball Falls at Home to Elmira

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost 56-49 to Elmira College in an Empire 8 Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) led Keuka College (1-15, 0-8 Empire 8) with 11 points.

It was a back and forth start to the game on Saturday as the two teams traded leads three times in the opening minutes. The Soaring Eagles would build an 11-6 advantage, but Keuka answered. Isabella Colon (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) knocked down a three for the Wolves. Katherine Deatherage (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Marcus Whitman) drove for a bucket to tie the game at 11-11. Elmira added a late bucket to lead 13-11 after one.

The Wolves took an early lead in the second on a three by Killian Mahoney, but Elmira would regain the edge. Another Mahoney three gave Keuka College a 19-17 lead midway through the quarter. The Soaring Eagles responded with six straight to take the lead back. The run was snapped by Sydney Brown, but Elmira scored the final eight points to lead 31-22 at the half.

The two teams exchanged a pair of points over the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Wolves attempted to cut into the margin. Sydney Brown knocked down a three for the Wolves. Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) cut the margin to four, 36-32, with four minutes left. Elmira would widen the gap, however, leading 43-36 after three quarters.

The Green and Gold did not go away in the fourth. A layup by Megan Brown (Middleburgh, N.Y. / Middleburgh) cut it back to four. Later, following a missed shot, Amelia Poole (Bloomfield, N.Y. / Bloomfield) got the steal and quickly hit a three to make it a one-point game, 43-42. Minutes later, Meaghan McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) made a jumper to give the Wolves a 44-43 lead with 5:49 left to play. The lead would change hands over the final minutes, but the game would be tied 46-46 with three minutes left. Elmira College would carry a five-point lead into the final minute. Keuka was unable to cut into the margin as the Wolves fell 56-49 on Saturday.

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will face Alfred University in back-to-back games to start this week of Empire 8 play. Keuka will travel to Alfred on Tuesday night and then the Saxons will return the trip on Wednesday to face the Wolves at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.
