Presidents sting Yellow Jackets to move to 5-0 in PAC play

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- A trio of veterans combined for 45 points to help lead the Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team to a 75-64 road victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. 
 
Kamryn Lach (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored a season-high 18 points to pace the Presidents. Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) finished with 15 points and five rebounds while Maddi Gutierrez(Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) added a season-high 12 points off the bench. The trio combined to account for nine of W&J's 11 made three-pointers on the night. 

W&J improves to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in PAC play. Waynesburg falls to 1-10 overall and 1-4 in conference action. 
 
The Presidents jumped out to an early 15-2 lead less than five minutes into the game behind three-pointers on three straight possessions by Lach. 
 
Freshman guard Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead to 23-11 at the 1:15 mark. Five straight points by Kacey Kastroll allowed Waynesburg to trim its deficit back into single digits at 23-16 after the first quarter of play. 
 
Waynesburg trimmed the deficit to 25-21 with a layup at the 7:13 to play in the quarter. The second quarter belonged to McDaniel, who accounted for 12 points in the frame, including a pair of three-point baskets. Her triple at the 5:03 mark pushed the lead back into double digits at 33-23. 
 
Gutierrez helped W&J close the half strong, as she contributed six points in the quarter, which included a three-point with 34 seconds left in the frame. Bezjak tacked on a pair of free throws with just four seconds to play to give W&J a 43-31 advantage. 
 
W&J was aided in the first half by a 7-12 effort from behind the three-point line over the first 20 minutes. The Presidents held a 26-4 edge in bench points in the first half. 
 
A baseline jumper by sophomore center Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) extended the Presidents lead to 48-35 at the 7:42 mark. The 13-point advantage was the largest of the game for W&J. 
 
Waynesburg was able to use some streaky three-point shooting in the third quarter to cut the deficit to as few as three points at 51-48. A pair of free throws by Lach extended the W&J lead to five (53-48) at the end of the quarter. 
 
A pair of triples by Gutierrez, including one with 5:39 to play, stretched the lead back into double digits at 68-57. Waynesburg was able to trim the deficit to six points but W&J was able to put things away at the free throw line. Lach and freshman guard Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) combined to drain six free throws over the final 28 seconds.  
 
Victoria Koeck (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) tallied four points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Presidents. Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led W&J on the glass with seven rebounds. 
 
The 11 made three-pointers as a team matched W&J's season high. The Presidents held a 38-8 edge in bench points and led for 39:05 of game action.
 
W&J travels to Grove City for a conference clash on Saturday, Jan. 15. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the College Arena in Mercer County.
