Mitchell Can't Hold Back Trinity

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team opened the new year with a 66-38 loss to Trinity College on Tuesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Four players scored in double figures for Trinity, which shot 51 percent for the game and improved to 10-3 on the season. Samantha Gallo, Reilly Campbell and Tori Varsamis led the way with 12 points apiece while Bailey Hyland chipped in 11. 

Dede Stevenson paced Mitchell with 14 points. The Mariners, playing for the first time in 24 days, shot just 24 percent as a team and committed 21 turnovers.

Mitchell stuck close in the opening quarter and took its lone lead of the contest on a free throw by Le'Sandra Turner that made it 9-8. The Bantams answered with six straight points to reclaim the lead, and the visitors held an 18-16 edge at the end of the period.

Trinity widened the margin to double digits in the second quarter, outscoring the Mariners 14-5 while holding them to only two field goals. After going into intermission with a 32-21 advantage, the Bantams continued to pour it on in the third. Gallo's eight points highlighted a 19-6 scoring edge for the visitors, who limited the Mariners to a single field goal in the period. 

Campbell netted eight of her 12 points in the final quarter, which saw the Bantams extend their lead to as many as 29. Trinity finished the game with a 37-29 advantage on the glass. Elizabeth Althoff led all players with eight rebounds. 

Stevenson, who hit four three-pointers on the night, also added team highs of seven rebounds and four steals. Turner contributed five boards, two assists and a block.

Mitchell (6-6 overall) will next host Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, January 15 at 1 p.m.
