Cortland Women Start Quickly in SUNYAC-Opening Win at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Cortland opened up a 30-8 lead in the game's first 15 minutes and the Red Dragons led by double figures the rest of the way in a 67-53 victory at Oswego in the SUNYAC women's basketball opener for both teams.
 
Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) led Cortland (4-2, 1-0) with 16 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench. She made 4-of-6 shots from the floor and 7-of-10 free throws. Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) hit 5-of-11 shots, including two 3-pointers, and ended with 13 points, four assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
 
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) and Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) each added 10 points. Longford also pulled in seven rebounds, while McGuire hit two treys and finished with four rebounds and two steals. Maggie Malone (Cornwall) chipped in with six points and five rebounds, while Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) had six rebounds and two assists in just seven minutes of action.
 
Oswego (3-4, 0-1) was led by Danielle Caivana, who hit five of her 10 shots from the 3-point arc on the way to a 23-point outing. Chastin Giles scored 10 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and handed out five assists, while Caitie Lilly had eight points, seven rebounds, five blocks and two steals.
 
Cortland shot 39 percent from the field, including 27 percent (8-for-30) from 3-point range, while Oswego finished at 29 percent overall and 22 percent (7-of-32) from long distance.
 
Cortland led 18-6 after one quarter and 30-8 with 5:16 left before halftime. The hosts finished the half on a 10-2 run to close with 14 points at halftime, but Cortland re-opened the lead to 22 points at 46-24 with 2:08 left in the third.
 
Oswego made another push, scoring 11 straight points to get within 46-35 with 41 seconds left in the quarter. Miedreich hit two free throws to close the quarter, however, and Cortland's lead ranged between 13 and 21 points over the final 10 minutes.
 
Cortland will host Brockport on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
