Millikin Women’s Basketball Wins at Illinois College

The Millikin University women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to win at Illinois College 74-65 on November 28 in Jacksonville, Illinois.

 

Millikin lead 13-7 after one quarter of play, but Illinois College rallied to take a 28-26 lead at halftime. The Big Blue had a strong start to the second half and pulled out to a 36-28 advantage on a three-pointer by Aubrey Staton with 7:21 left in the third quarter. The Big Blue maintained an eight-point lead over the next minute and led 40-32 with six minutes left in the quarter. Illinois College then went on a 14-2 run to take the lead at 46-42 on a basket from Kendra Bass with 2:22 left in the third. Illinois College lead 59-57 heading into the fourth quarter.

 

Millikin would outscore the Lady Blues 25-14 in the final quarter to seal the victory. The Big Blue took the lead at 56-53 on a layup and free throw from Jordan Hildebrand with 6:54 left in the game.  Millikin pushed the lead to seven at 62-55 with 3:53 remaining in the game. Millikin's Miranda Fox would hit 8-10 free throws in the final minutes to seal the victory.

 

Millikin shot 40 percent (26-55) from the field in a game with seven lead changes and eight ties. The Big Blue were 8-23 from three-point range and 14-19 from the free throw line. Illinois College went 22-48 (46 percent) from the field and make 1-3 from three-point range. Illinois College was 20-24 from the free throw line. Millikin scored 32 points off of 27 Illinois College turnovers.

 

Elyce Knudsen led Millikin with 22 points, five assists and four rebounds. Hildebrand scored 15 points and had eight rebounds. Staton finished with 12 points. The Big Blue got some key contributions off the bench with Chelsea McCullum scoring six points including four in the fourth quarter along with three steals and two rebounds. Sophie Darden had eight rebounds along with two points and Emily White made two first half three-pointers to finish with six points.

 

Bass led Illinois College with 20 points followed by Lilly Pepper with 18 points and nine rebounds.

 

Millikin is now 4-3 while Illinois College goes to 1-4. The Big Blue opens College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Saturday, December 4 at 2 p.m. hosting Augustana College.
