Milestone Performances Lift Lynx Over WashU For Fifth Straight Win

Memphis - Fueled by milestone performances from seniors Kiera Downey and Alli Mayeux, the Rhodes women's basketball team hung on down the stretch to defeat the WashU Bears 83-80 at Mallory Gymnasium on Sunday, November 21.
Downey led all scorers with 28 points and joined the Lynx 1000-point club in the process. Mayeux recorded a double-double, scoring 20 points on 5 of 9 three-point field goal attempts and added a game high 10 rebounds. Mayeux joined the Lynx 500-rebound club during the contest.
The Lynx also got 14 points from senior guard Ellen Hagen and sophomore guard A'niya Lagarde added 12 points and 7 rebounds in 18 minutes of play. It was a Lagarde putback with 34 seconds to play that gave the Lynx the lead for good at 81-80. After a WashU turnover, Hagen sealed the contest with two free throws as the Lynx won their fifth consecutive game to improve to 5-1 overall.
The Lynx shot 39.7% from the field as a team (25-63) however, hit 10 three-point field goals in the contest, including five straight to open the game. After trailing 47-43 at the half, Rhodes rallied for the win as they connected on 12 of 17 free throws in the final stanza to preserve the win.
The Lynx recorded their first win over WashU since the 1987 season and it was their fourth win in the all-time series against the Bears. During Rhodes' five game win streak, they also defeated East Texas Baptist University, the pre-season second ranked team in the nation by D3hoops.com. Rhodes is hopeful to return to the top 25 rankings after the holidays, for the first time since the 2014 season.
The Lynx return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday, playing in the Millsaps Thanksgiving Tournament. Rhodes will play the University of Dallas on Saturday, November 27 in the opening game of the tourney.
