Women's Basketball Finishes Wesleyan Classic With Win Over Albertus Magnus

MIDDLETOWN, CT – (some information taken from Albertus Magnus College Sports Information) The Hartwick women's basketball team bounced back from yesterday's loss to Wesleyan, using a 17-7 point differential in the first quarter to down Albertus Magnus, 64-50, on the second day of the Wesleyan Classic. Maggie Kirby (Selkirk, NY/Bethlehem) was named to the All-Tournament team, having averaged 12.5 points and six rebounds per game over Hartwick's two games. The Hawks are now 4-2 on the year, while the Falcons drop to 0-3.

Hartwick opened the game on a 6-2 run behind a trio of lay-ups from three different scorers. During the Hawks' run, Caitlyn Scott got the Falcons on the board in the first minute of the first quarter on an easy jumper. A pair of Diamond White free throws cut the deficit to two, 6-4, but Maggie Kirby responded with another lay-up to push the score to 8-4 with 5:20 left on the clock. Hartwick then exploded for a 9-1 run to push their lead to 12, at 17-5, with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Mikyla Mitchell (Glenville, NY/Mekeel Christian Academy) was the scorer of all of those points, hitting a trio of three-pointers. A pair of Katherine Raposo free throws cut the Albertus deficit to ten, 17-7, to end the first stanza.

The Hawks carried their run into the second quarter pushing their lead to 23-9 with just over six minutes remaining. Shortly after, the Falcons went on a quick 4-0 push to trim the hosts' lead to 10, 23-13, behind a Scott free throw and lay-up. Hartwick retaliated by extending its lead to 27-13 on a Giuliana Pritchard (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) jumper with 3:44 left to play in the frame. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Hartwick leading by 14, at 33-19, heading into the halftime break.

Albertus came out of the locker room hot as a Scott layup sparked a 5-2 run that brought the Falcons to within 11, 35-24. Hartwick responded shortly after with a 7-2 run that pushed the score to 16, 42-26, heading into a Hawk timeout at the 4:03 mark. The Falcons continued to chip away at the double-digit deficit and continued to trail 'Wick, 45-30, heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

The Hawks opened the fourth quarter with a 5-2 run, as Angelina Maselli (Burlington, CT/Kingswood Oxford) hit a long trey to push the hosts' lead to 18, 50-32. A Raposo steal and lay-up pushed the visitors to 34 points before Hartwick went on a 6-0 run to increase their advantage to 56-34, with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation. The Falcons responded with their own 6-0 stretch to make it 56-40, as Sharaya Keele swooshed a jumper, Scott sank a lay-up, and Raposo nailed both of her shots from the charity stripe.  The teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Raposo netting four points on a pair of made jumpers. Jakara Murray-Leach added a trey of her own, while Scott added three points on a free throw and a made lay-up.

Pritchard tied for the game high with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting, adding in six rebounds and two blocks as well. Mitchell finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, and four steals, and Bree Fargnoli (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) contributed 12 points and four rebounds off the bench.

The Hawks outshot the Falcons, 38.6% to 30.2%, and had a massive rebounding advantage, 53-33. That included a 26 to 16 lead in offensive rebounds, leading to a gargantuan 23-4 advantage in second chance points.

'Wick now pauses for the Thanksgiving break, as they return to action on Thursday, December 2 at Hamilton. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
