Strong Second half Propels U.S.M.M.A. Past Bearcats

The Baruch College lost a competitive non-conference contest to the Mariners from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 53-48, on Wednesday night in the ARC Arena.

The Bearcats took a 23-22 lead into halftime limiting the visitors to 29 percent shooting (9-for-31), including 0-for-4 from three-point range.

Mia Castillo and Leila Deluty had eight points to help build the halftime lead.

The turning point of the contest took place in the final 2:56 of the third period with the score tied at 31-31. The Mariners scored six straight points to jump ahead 37-31.

They also scored the first basket at the start of the fourth period for a 39-31 lead.

The lead would later grow to 10 points (45-35), but the Bearcats rallied back getting as close as 51-48 on a three by Castillo with one minute left.

The Mariners scored the only basket in the final minute to walk away with the 53-48 victory.

Milly Ye and Deluty finished with 13 points each. Castillo had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds

Bryanne Buchanan-Cummings led the visitors with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
