Women’s Basketball Down in Tournament Opener

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost their first game of the Brockport Tip-off Tournament 94-81 to SUNY Morrisville on Friday evening.  

Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) led Keuka College (0-2) with a career-high 18 points. Amelia Poole (Bloomfield, N.Y. / Bloomfield) and Meaghan McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) each finished with 16 points for the Wolves.

The two teams scored early and often in a close opening frame. The points came from the paint as the two teams combined to go 1-14 from three-point territory. Hill hit the only three of the quarter as she scored seven in the first and added six rebounds. Meaghan McGwin had a put-back layup at the buzzer to cut into the Mustang lead as Morrisville led 23-20 after one.

The Wolves attempted to cut into the advantage in the second but Morrisville remained ahead. The Mustangs outscored the Wolves 21-18 in the quarter. The Wolves were led by eight points by Amelia Poole as the senior went a perfect 3-3 from the field in the second including a pair of threes. However, SUNY Morrisville carried a 44-38 lead into halftime.

The third was the highest-scoring of the game as the two teams combined for 51 points. The Green and Gold cut into the lead early and then tied the game at 45-45 on a three by Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy). The Wolves then took the lead on a three by Lauren Hill, but the Mustangs answered right back with a three of their own. With the game later tied at 52-52, the Wolves scored seven unanswered with five from Hill. The run was capped by a fast-break layup by Ellen Lavonas (Brighton, N.Y. / Brighton) to lead 59-52, Keuka's largest lead of the game. The Mustangs would go on a run of their own. They would regain the lead and hold a 67-62 advantage over Keuka. A Lavonas layup cut it to three, but the Mustangs added a basket and took a 69-64 lead into the final quarter.

Morrisville continued to force the game in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs scored the first 14 of the quarter to open to take an 83-64 lead. The run would be snapped by a three by Jenna LaMere (Scottsville, N.Y. / Wheatland-Chili). The Wolves would cut the margin to 13 multiple times in the final minutes, but were never able to get it past there as Keuka College fell to SUNY Morrisville 94-81.

KC Notes:

  • The Wolves are now 15-10 all-time against SUNY Morrisville, but the Mustangs have won the last three
  • It was the first-ever neutral site meeting between the former conference foes
  • It was the most points scored by either team in the 25-game series
  • As a team, Keuka College hit 13 threes, tying for second-most in program history
  • Lauren Hill added a career and team-high nine rebounds
  • As a team, Keuka College held the rebounding edge 52-42. It was the first time the Wolves had 50+ rebounds since February 2019     

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will conclude the Brockport Tip-off Tournament on Saturday in the consolation game. Keuka College will face Medaille College at 1pm after the Mavericks fell to Brockport on Friday night.
