NJCU Women's Basketball Dominates St. Elizabeth in Season-Opener

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's basketball team completely dominated every facet of the game on Thursday night, Nov. 11, in the season-opening win at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC). The Gothic Knights defeated St. Elizabeth University 97-31 as NJCU filled every section of the stat sheet, highlighted by a pair of near-triple doubles, an astounding debut and a program-record steals total.

The Knights (1-0) were shorthanded on the night against the Eagles (0-1), having only a squad of seven for the game. Four of the five starters played at least 32 minutes, led by sophomore Damaris Rodriguez' (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) 39. Additionally, all five scored in double figures, led by junior Jada Camacho's (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) game-high 26 points in her Gothic Knight debut. She added nine steals, eight rebounds and a game-best four blocks as well.

Rodriguez stuffed the stat sheet as well, finishing with the first double-double of her career — just one assist shy of a triple double — after totaling 19 points, a tied a career-best with a game-high nine assists, seven boards and a Jersey City program-record and game- and career-best 16 steals — just four shy of tying the NCAA Division III single-game record, but the fourth-highest total since 1993 when D3 started tracking steals.

Junior Laney Fox (Parkland, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) joined Rodriguez with a double-double of her own, finishing with 17 points and a game- and career-high 10 rebounds to go with career-high-tying blocks (3) and steals (2) totals. Sophomore Briana Davis (Bronx, N.Y./Lincoln (via County Prep)) and junior Jimmirah Johnson (Prospect Park, N.J./International) dominated down low as well, each grabbing seven boards. Davis chipped in a career-high 15 points, tied her career-best with three steals, blocked two shots and a pair of assists (also ties a career-high), while Johnson had a career-high 13 points and two blocks of her own. Rookies Olivia Wooten (East Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and Kyla Craddock (Orange, N.J./Newark Tech) each also played meaningful minutes for the Gothic Knights. Wooten was on the court for 26 minutes, finishing with four points, four boards, two assists and a pair of steals, while Craddock pulled down eight boards to go with three points.

In game action, after a slow start in the first quarter where NJCU led just 16-10, the second period saw the Gothic Knights explode with a 33-6 advantage to the 49-16 lead. They then outscored SEU 30-4 in the third quarter before closing it out with a six-point difference in the fourth and final quarter to take the 66-point victory.
