Quick start not enough at Penn State Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Hood College women's basketball team hit its first six field goal attempts, but foul trouble and 36 combined points by Kendis Butler and Anna Mahan led Penn State Harrisburg to a 69-65 win. 

Inside the Box Score  

  • Tiffany Manning scored a game-high 21 points on 5-9 shooting and five rebounds. The sophomore went 10-of-11 at the free throw line. 

  • Nikki Etchison finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. 

  • Morgan Anderson scored 10 points and five rebounds. 

How it Happened  

  • Hood got started early, hitting six field goals in a row to open the game, the last of which was a layup by Manning to extend the lead to 12-2 with 5:30 left in the period. Two made 3-pointers by Butler pulled Penn State Harrisburg within six with 4:25 on the clock. A free throw by Manning gave the Blazers a 28-18 advantage to end the period. 

  • Penn State Harrisburg cut the deficit down to three points after a free-throw by Butler in the second quarter with 5:26 remaining 34-31. Three free throws by Manning led the Blazers back to a four-point lead. After trailing the remainder of the quarter, the Lions' Jayla Galbreath made a layup in the last 33 seconds to tie the score at 43 going into halftime. 

  • PSH took its first lead of the game after a made layup by Mahan with 6:24 remaining. Two more free throws by Manning tied the game 53-53 at end of the third quarter. 

  • The Lions came back strong to open the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run, taking a 62-55 lead with 5:57 remaining.  

  • Anderson led a 5-0 spurt to keep the Blazers within one with 2:36 remaining. A pair of layups by Newson and Anderson tied the game at 65 with 35 seconds remaining. The Lions made four free throws. Mahan drained the last pair with one second on the clock to put the game out of reach. THESE WERE THE WINNING POINTS, MENTION WHO AND WHEN. 

Analysis  

  • The two teams spent much of the night at the foul line. Hood finished 21-of-28, while PSH was 23-of-31. 

  • Hood edged a 34-32 advantage in points in the paint.  

  • The Blazers outrebounded the Lions 42-38.  

  • Hood scored 17 points off turnovers, two more than Penn State. 

For the Opponent  

  • Mahan recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions. 

  • Butler finished with 18 points, going 3-of-9 from 3-point range. The Blazers held the rest of the Lions to 0-for-13 behind the arc. 

  • Toni Amato scored 11 points, including nine at the free throw line. 

Notes  

  • The Blazers drop to 1-1 on the season, while the Lions improved to 1-0.
