St. Olaf tops Macalester in season finale for Mahlum's first win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team held off Macalester College by a 75-71 for its first win under head coach Kelly Mahlum in the team's season finale on Tuesday evening at Skoglund Center.

Keegan MulvihillRachel Kelly, and Cassie Fix were all in double figures for St. Olaf (1-2) and combined to score 43 points on the night. The Oles trailed Macalester (3-1) by two early in the third quarter before going on a 7-0 run over 1:30 of game to take the lead for good.

Mulvihill scored a team-high 16 points to go with five rebounds and four steals, while Kelly added 15 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Fix was 6-for-10 from the field on her way to 13 points – the second-highest point total of her career.

St. Olaf shot an even 50.0 percent (8-for-16) from the field to take a 21-16 lead after one quarter. Both teams scored 14 points in the paint in the opening 10 minutes, as Mulvihill had seven of her 16 points early on.

The Scots cut a seven-point deficit to one three minutes into the second quarter before Mulvihill and Fix scored the next two baskets to quickly push the Oles' lead back to five. After shooting just 35.0 percent (7-for-20) in the first quarter, Macalester was 6-for-8 (75.0 percent) from the field in the second quarter, but the Oles still led 34-31 at the half.

Macalester scored the first five points of the second quarter to take its only lead of the game at 36-34 with 8:06 remaining. St. Olaf responded with a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead for good. Grace Hegland had back-to-back layups in the final 1:36 of the quarter and finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

The Oles led by between four and eight points for the entire fourth quarter until the final minute. St. Olaf led 67-63 with 3:34 to go before holding Macalester scoreless until a Katherine Podoll three-pointer with 30 seconds to go by which time the Oles had built an 11-point lead.

St. Olaf forced 22 Macalester turnovers and turned them into a 22-7 advantage in points off turnovers in the game.
