East Player of the Year Raenett Hughes Leads Six Comets on All-ASC Teams

UT Dallas senior guard Raenett Hughes has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Women's Basketball Player of the Year for the second straight season as she was one of six Comets recognized Tuesday on the league's all-conference teams.

The Comets' all-time leading scorer, Hughes was listed both first team All-ASC East and on the prestigious All-ASC squad, both for the third consecutive season, while senior guard Kelley Skinner was listed as second team All-ASC East. Sophomore guard Paris Brinkley was tabbed honorable mention All-ASC East.

Center McKenzie Howard was recognized as as the ASC East Freshman of the Year this season and was joined by forward/center Mia Rudin on the division's All-Freshman Team. Hughes and sophomore guard Jordan Maxwell were listed on the ASC East All-Defensive Team.

A native of College Station, Hughes ranked second in the ASC this season with 15.9 points per outing while adding 6.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game as well. She ranked fourth in the ASC in steals per game while ranking 13th in both assists and rebounds. Hughes shot 42.5 percent from the field as a senior, ranking her 11th in the ASC. She topped double-digit scoring in 14 of 17 games this season and recorded four 'double-doubles'. Hughes was both the ASC East's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year as a junior in 2019-20 en route to becoming the Comets' first-ever WBCA All-American that spring. She was also the division's Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. As a freshman, Hughes was listed second team All-ASC East and the division's Freshman of the Year. In addition to holding the program career record for points (1,582), Hughes ranks third all-time in rebounds (596), fifth in assists (256) and second in steals (243).

Skinner, a native of Katy, became the Comets' all-time rebounding leader as a senior as she was listed as second All-ASC East after claiming honorable mention recognition each of her first three seasons. She closed her senior season with 8.4 points and 8.0 boards per outing, ranking fifth in the ASC rebounding. Skinner scored in double figures in four contests and topped double-digit rebounds in four games as well, recording one 'double-double'. She wrapped up her career with 656 rebounds and also ranked fourth in points (883), seventh in both assists (219) and steals (149).

A native of Burnett, Brinkley 7.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game for the Comets, while shooting 41.7 percent from teh field and 39.3 percent from three-point range.

Howard, a native of Fort Worth, became the third Comet to even claim ASC East Freshman of the Year honors, joining for UTD greats Lyndsey Smith (2009) and Hughes (2018), two of the three top scorers in program history. Howard averaged 5.7 and 4.2 rebounds per game as a freshman.

Rudin, a native of Commerce, closed her freshman campaign with 1.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game in her first season with the program.

A native of El Paso, Maxwell averaged 5.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game over her sophomore season.

The Comets wrapped up the 2020-21 season with a 14-3 overall record, finishing second in the ASC East with a 9-2 league mark. UTD advanced to the ASC Tournament for the 15th consecutive season.
