#13 Millikin Women Fall in Overtime

         The #13 ranked Millikin women's basketball team lost to Illinois Wesleyan 81-72 in overtime on February 9, 2021 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.

         After playing each other just five days ago, both teams knew what to expect from each other, which resulted in a crazy game with 50 turnovers, 51 fouls, 54 free throws and 89 rebounds.

         Millikin suffered through a dismal shooting night making 30 percent (23-76) from the field and going 4-31 (13 percent) from three point range.

The Big Blue were solid at the free throw line making 22-24 (92 percent), which help keep them in the game.

         Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 16-8 lead after to the first quarter with Millikin going 2-14 from the field. The Big Blue battled back in the second quarter with the game tied at 28 at halftime. Millikin found its offense rhythm in the third quarter making 8-17 and building a 51-45 lead at the end of three quarters. A Jordan Hildebrand basket with 5:44 remaining in the game put Millikin up 59-49. Millikin would again go ice cold from the field in the final minutes finishing the quarter shooting 4-18. Kendall Sosa would score the next 12 straight points for the Titans and her three-pointer tied the game at 62-62 with 1:39 left in the game. Abby Ratch hit two free throws to make it 64-62 Big Blue, but Sosa would strike again tying the game with a basket with just under a minute remaining forcing the game to overtime. Sosa would score 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime period combined.

         Illinois Wesleyan outscored Millikin 17-8 in the overtime as the Big Blue managed to make only 3-12 from the field.

         The Titans shot 42 percent (26-62) from the field and made 6-25 (24 percent) from three-point range. Illinois Wesleyan made 23-30 from the free throw line. The Titans won the rebounding battle 45-44.

         Hildebrand led Millikin with 21 points and five rebounds. Elyce Knudsen added 12 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Abby Ratsch added 10 points.

         Sosa led the Titans with 47 points. Brooke Lansford scored 11 and Samantha Munroe added 10.

         Millikin is now 4-2 on the season while Illinois Wesleyan improves to 2-1. The Big Blue's 4-1 started earned them the 13th spot in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 national poll.

         Millikin will host North Central on February 11 at 7 p.m.
