Muskies make plays down stretch, top Falcons for Peterson’s first win

Megan Will (Sr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored 21 points, Janai' Farr (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) scored the go-ahead basket with 1:33 left in the game and Head Coach Amber Peterson earned her first win as head coach of the Lakeland University women's basketball team with a 58-51 win over Concordia University Wisconsin.

The Muskies scored the game's final seven points to gain a split of the two-game Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference series, avenging a 55-50 loss to the Falcons the night before. Lakeland improved to 1-1 overall and in conference and earned first-year coach Peterson her first win as head coach.

A back-and-forth game included 12 lead changes and 10 ties, the final coming when Concordia's Lindsey Smitsdorff made two free throws with 1:55 left. Farr's driving layup with just over a minute and a half remaining put the Muskies ahead for good, though, and after getting a stop the Muskies extended the lead to four with a short jumper by Will with 34 seconds left. Her basket came at the end of the shot clock, the ball bouncing on the rim four times before falling and giving the Muskies a two-possession lead.

Unlike the night before when CUW (3-2 overall, 1-1 NACC) took control in the second half, the Muskies were the stronger team this time in the final 20 minutes. Lakeland outscored the Falcons 32-22 after halftime and held the visitors to 4 of 24 shooting (16.7%) in the second half.

After trailing 26-24 at halftime, Lakeland pulled ahead in the third quarter on a layup by Will with 7:07 left in the period to make it 33-32. After the teams swapped the lead again, Kacey Gardner (Jr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) made two free throws and Morgan Zenon (Jr.-Twin Lakes, Wis.) scored inside to give the Muskies a 41-38 lead with two minutes remaining in the quarter, but two late Falcon free throws cut the Muskies' lead to 41-40 going into the fourth quarter.

Farr opened up the fourth with a three-pointer that gave the Muskies their largest lead of the game to that point. The Falcons battled back to take a 49-48 lead on a pair of free throws with 2:44 remaining in the game, but Will's three-point play put Lakeland back ahead. The Muskies scored the final seven points, though, including three free throws by Gardner in the final 20 seconds to salt the game away.

Lakeland started strong and bolted out to a 9-4 lead halfway through the first quarter. CUW responded with a hot streak of their own, outscoring the Muskies 12-5 in the final four minutes to take a slim 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Muskies spent much of the second quarter tying the score or keeping the Falcons' lead to two. Concordia Wisconsin took their largest lead of the game with 1:13 remaining in the quarter after a Hannah Boettcher jumper set the score at 29-23, but Lauren Downs (So.-West Bend, Wis.) hit a three pointer with 50 seconds left to put the score at 29-26 heading into halftime.

Will led all scorers with 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting and added eight rebounds. Gardner recorded the first double-double of her career, finishing with 10 points plus a career-high 12 rebounds. She also added a team-high seven assists and made 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

Lakeland shot 21 of 59 for the game (35.6%) and also outrebounded Concordia 43-38. The Falcons shot 14 of 52 (26.9%) but stayed close making 20 of 25 from the free throw line (80.0%).

Lakeland celebrated Senior Night before the game, honoring five players including Farr, Will, Kaity Birkholz (Watertown, Wis.), Abby Nylund (Crystal Falls, Mich.) and Michelle Percudani (Kirkland, Mich.). Four saw action, all getting the start along with Gardner, who played all 40 minutes.
