Disciplined Defense Aids Lynx in Victory Over Centre

Danville, Ky. - Rhodes College women's basketball improves to 3-0 after a 63-49 victory in their first road game of the season. The Lynx defense kept the Colonels from attempting any free throws until the final two minutes of the third period. Rhodes only committed one defensive foul in the first half and Centre was held to six free throw attempts the entire game. 

Junior Ellen Hagen opened the game with a three-pointer on Rhodes' way to a 7-0 run before Centre found their way onto the scoreboard in their season opener after six minutes of play.
 
Rhodes led 10-2 and finally 12-6 after the first 10 minutes of play with a 16-12 rebounding advantage. The Lynx went up by 10 after scoring the first four points of the second period. Centre's offense continued to push back, eventually totaling a 13-9 second period scoring advantage to pull within two of the Lynx at halftime. Rhodes led 21-19 after committing their first foul of the game with only 2:47 left before the break. At halftime, Rhodes was led by Caroline Taylor's five points while Alli Mayeux and Catherine Althoff had each accumulated four rebounds.

Mayeux scored the first bucket of the second half on a jump stop which was followed up with a Kiera Downey layup to put the Lynx ahead by six. A Centre three-pointer and fast break layup pulled the hosts within three points, but later a free throw from Mayeux and a layup by Libby Long again put Rhodes ahead by 10. Downey stole the ball from Centre and assisted Mathangani who finished the and-one for a 13-point Lynx advantage with 2:48 remaining. Rhodes led 42-34 after their 21-15 third period advantage.
 
Centre opened the final frame with five consecutive points to pull within three. Rhodes responded with 10 unanswered points, including seven straight from Downey to again lead by 13 points. Rhodes held Centre scoreless in the final three minutes of the game. The Lynx recorded another 21-15 scoring advantage, aided by six steals in the fourth period alone. Rhodes stole the ball from the Colonels on three straight possessions and held as large as a 15-point lead in the game.

Downey led all players with 17 points, scoring 14 in the second half, and three steals. She also led the Lynx alongside Mayeux and Maya Longacre with seven rebounds each. Althoff recorded double digit points for the third game in a row, totaling 13 along with her six rebounds.

Rhodes recorded a .354 shooting percentage compared to Centre's .308. The two teams struggled from long range, combining to go 7-of-37 from beyond the arc.

The Lynx and Centre's will meet on the hardwood again Saturday at 1 p.m. ET in Danville, Ky.
