No. 24 WashU Collects 75-64 Win Over Augustana

Dubuque, Iowa, Nov. 16, 2019 – The No. 24-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team bounced back in the second day of the Loras College Tip-Off Classic to defeat Augustana College (Ill.) 75-64 on Saturday in Dubuque, Iowa.

The Bears improve to 1-1 on the season while the Vikings fall to 1-3.

WashU had four players in double figures, including senior Kristina Schmelter who scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for her second career double-double. Freshman guard Naomi Jackson scored a career-high 11 points, going 4-for-6 from the floor with three three-pointers.

Freshmen Molly Gannon and Sammi Matoush both scored a career-high 10 points as Matoush also collected six rebounds for the Bears.

Sophomore Isabelle Hren nailed a three-pointer at the 5:42 mark in the first quarter to kick-start the Bears offensive push. WashU pushed their lead to 22-11 at 2:56 on a Matoush three-pointer. Augustana hit two late free throws to dent WashU's lead to 24-16 at the end of the quarter. 

WashU started the second quarter with the offensive momentum on their side, going up by 21 at 41-20 at the 5:09 mark on freshman Maya Arnott's layup. The Bears cooled off late as the Vikings closed out the half on a 16-6 run to cut the Bears' lead to 47-36. 

In the third quarter, the Vikings kicked up the pressure and chipped away at the Bears' lead. Augustana got within five with a 1:30 left in the quarter at 60-55. Matoush hit a jumper while freshman Rachel Mahler converted a layup to give WashU a 64-56 lead at the end of the quarter. 

The Bears pushed their lead back to 13 (69-56) at the 8:30 mark in the fourth quarter and held the Vikings at bay the rest of the way to collect the 75-64 victory.

WashU opens their home schedule on Friday, Nov. 22 when they welcome Rhodes College for a 3 p.m. tip in the WU Field House.
