Yeshiva Concludes Season With Skyline Loss to St. Joseph's College Long Island

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team concluded the 2019-20 season with a Skyline Conference loss to St. Joseph's College Long Island, 84-75, at the ARC Arena on Saturday evening. The Maccabees finish the season 7-18 overall, and 4-16 in the Skyline. The Golden Eagles advance to 9-16 for the season, and 7-13 against league competition.

Leading the way for the Maccabees was freshman guard Yuval Nitzan who tallied a team-high 19 points, distributed six assists, and forced a game-high seven steals. Senior forward Tehilla Teigman generated her 18th double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jessie Orgel added 11 points with four boards.

After falling behind by a score of 6-2, the Maccabees scored seven straight points to take the lead. Nitzan capped off the early-game rally by converting a layup and being fouled at the same time. She hit the shot from the charity stripe to complete the three-point play and put the Macs up, 9-6, with 7:21 left in the opening quarter. After the Golden Eagles jumped back in front, Teigman received the pass from Orgel and successfully executed a layup to give the Blue and White a 16-15 edge with 3:44 to go in the period. Freshman guard Alyssa Adomaites finished the quarter strong for the Golden Eagles by scoring a field goal in the paint with 59 ticks left to give the visiting team a 19-18 advantage. That would be the score after 10 minutes of play.

Thanks to a layup by Teigman, and two free throws courtesy of Nitzan, the Maccabees regained the lead by a score of 22-20. However, the Golden Eagles countered with an 8-0 run to regain the advantage for good, 28-22, with 5:39 left to play in the first half. Sophomore forward Mahlia Leventhal was able to cap off a mini-rally for Yeshiva by converting a layup to pull the home team to within three, at 31-28, but SJCLI outscored Yeshiva, 9-6, the rest of the quarter to go into the intermission up, 42-34.

St. Joseph's took control of the game in the third quarter by outscoring Yeshiva, 21-16, during the frame and led by as many as 17. Yeshiva trailed 63-49 after 30 minutes of play.

Nitzan began the final period of regulation time by nailing a 3-point basket, and converting a layup, to narrow YU's deficit to 63-54. That's as close as Yeshiva would get, as St. Joseph's did not allow the home team to generate a consistent rally to get back into the game. The Golden Eagles went on to win the season-finale, 84-75.

For the Maccabees, Leventhal just missed a double-double with nine points and just as many rebounds. Junior forward Lindsay Brandwein ended her season on a strong note with eight points and 10 boards. Senior guard Adina Rosenberg concluded her collegiate career with six points, five rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals.

For the Golden Eagles, Adomaites led all players with 27 points, while forcing six steals, grabbing five rebounds, and distributing just as many assists. Sophomore guard Megan Steinman tallied a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Congratulations to graduating seniors Ellie ParkerChana WeinbergLeah ShulmanChana Boltax, Teigman, and Rosenberg for concluding their successful collegiate basketball careers at Yeshiva University.
