OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team suffered a Skyline loss to the College at Old Westbury, 78-56, at the Clark Athletic Center on Tuesday evening. The Panthers advance to 10-14 overall and 10-9 in Skyline play, while the Maccabees drop to 7-17 for the season and 4-15 against league competition.
Yeshiva started off strong, leading by as many as eight during the first half, but Old Westbury came storming back in the third quarter by outscoring YU, 26-10, in the frame on its way to the come-from-behind conference victory.
Leading the way for the Maccabees was senior forward Tehilla Teigman, who produced her 17th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while blocking three shots and forcing a pair of steals. First-year forward Mahlia Leventhal also had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 17 rebounds. Freshman guard Yuval Nitzan netted eight points and distributed four assists. Sophomore forward Jennie Mellman tallied 11 points.
After falling behind, 6-0, Mellman and Leventhal combined for two layups to highlight five straight points that pulled YU to within one, with 6:45 left in the opening period. Later in the stanza, Yeshiva went on a run by scoring the last six points of the quarter to take a 16-12 advantage. Teigman began the run with back-to-back layups, while Mellman concluded the rally with a layup of her own. That would be the score after one quarter, as both teams were held scoreless for the remaining 2:28 of the stanza.
Nitzan got Yeshiva off to a strong start in the second frame, as her successful jump shot during the opening possession gave Yeshiva an 18-12 lead. The Panthers countered with four straight points to narrow YU's advantage to two, with 8:52 left in the half. With the game tied, 23-23, Nitzan converted a layup while being fouled. She added the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play and give the Maccabees a 26-23 lead, with 6:19 left to play in the second quarter.
The Maccabees kept surging in the second stanza, as a fast break layup by Teigman gave the Blue and White a 30-24 hold. After Old Westbury inched closer, Teigman struck again with a field goal inside the arc to increase Yeshiva's lead to 33-26, with 3:08 left to play. The Maccabees led by as many as eight during the first 20 minutes, but the Panthers scored the last five points of the stanza to shrink YU's benefit to 34-31 at the intermission.
The Panthers came storming out of the gate in the third quarter, scoring the first 15 points to jump out to a 46-34 advantage. A layup by Mellman ended Yeshiva's scoring drought (6:41 without a basket), with 6:01 left in the stanza. The Panthers eventually inflated their lead to 13 and took a 57-44 advantage into the final quarter of regulation time.
Yeshiva trailed by as many as 25 in the final period, as Old Westbury went on to earn the come-from-behind Skyline win, 78-56.
For the Maccabees, sophomore guard Jessie Orgel generated nine points, five steals, and three rebounds. Senior guard Rosenberg added two points and four rebounds. First-year guard Nechama Braun added two points, while sophomore guard Elisheva Mirwis converted a free throw.
For the Panthers, senior center Davida Warren led all players with 22 points and 25 rebounds. Junior guard Micha Brown added 20 points with seven assists.
The Maccabees will conclude the 2020 season with a Skyline Conference battle against St. Joseph's College Long Island, at the ARC Arena, on Saturday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
