Boltax Knocks Down Pair of Free Throws In Closing Seconds to Lift Yeshiva University Over Purchase College

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Senior guard Chana Boltax drained two free throws with 6.9 seconds left in regulation to lift the Yeshiva University women's basketball team to a 64-63 Skyline win over Purchase College, at the Campbell Sports Center, on Thursday evening.

The Maccabees (7-15, 4-13 Skyline) trailed 63-62 before Boltax drew the foul that led her to hitting the game-tying and game-winning shots from the charity stripe. Yeshiva then played strong defense in the closing seconds to clinch the come-from-behind conference victory.

"I am really proud of the players for earning a bounce-back win after a couple of tough losses," Yeshiva University Head Coach Michael Alon said. "They were very poised tonight and played great defense down the stretch."

Leading the way for the Maccabees was senior forward Tehilla Teigman, who notched a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while forcing four steals. Senior guard Adina Rosenberg tallied 13 points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. Freshman guard Yuval Nitzan netted 11 points, brought down five caroms, distributed just as many assists, and collected five steals.

Yeshiva scored seven unanswered points during the first quarter, capped off by a 3-point field goal from sophomore guard Jessie Orgel, to give Yeshiva a 14-7 advantage with 2:31 remaining in the stanza. Purchase (4-18, 3-14 Skyline) finished the quarter with a 7-2 run to narrow YU's lead to 16-14 after 10 minutes of play.

With the game even at 23 points apiece in the second quarter, Teigman grabbed an offensive rebound and provided the put-back basket while being fouled. She added the free throw to complete the three-point play and put Yeshiva up, 26-23, with 5:31 left to play in the half. Over a minute later, Orgel found Rosenberg, who converted a layup and was fouled at the same time. She buried the free throw to give Yeshiva a 29-23 hold. The Panthers countered with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 21 points apiece. Orgel halted the opposition's momentum by nailing a jump shot to put YU back up by two, with 1:53 left.

Both teams were held scoreless until junior guard D.J. Peoples drew a shooting foul from beyond the arc with less than a second left in the half. She connected on all three free throw attempts to give the Panthers a 34-33 lead heading into the intermission.

The Maccabees came storming out of the gate in the third quarter, scoring six unanswered points to take a 40-34 advantage. The highlight of Yeshiva's early blitz was Nitzan drawing a foul while connecting on a layup and then adding the free throw for the three-point play. Purchase came firing back, later in the quarter, scoring 12 unanswered points to put Yeshiva in a 48-42 hole with 1:59 left to play in the third period. Boltax ended Yeshiva's drought with a successful shot from downtown to cut the deficit in half, at 48-45, with 1:35 to go. That would be the score after 30 minutes of play.

After falling behind by five in the fourth quarter, Rosenberg and Teigman combined for back-to-back field goals in the paint to narrow YU's deficit to 52-51. Both teams kept exchanging baskets for most of the final regulation period. Rosenberg began to change the pattern by drawing a shooting foul from beyond the arc, awarding her three free throw shots. She nailed all three attempts from the charity stripe to shrink Yeshiva's deficit to one, at 61-60, with 1:39 left to play. Freshman forward Reina Lebron answered with a jump shot to put Purchase back up by three. Yeshiva countered on the next possession, as Rosenberg found Teigman, who nailed the jumper to narrow the Panthers' lead to 63-62, with 1:02 left to play in regulation.

The score remained the same with Purchase having the ball with 25 ticks left on the clock. However, Purchase threw the inbound pass away and Yeshiva was awarded the ball. That set up Boltax's heroics as she took a feed from Orgel in the closing seconds and began to drive towards the basket before being fouled with 6.9 seconds left. With Yeshiva down by one, the Rockville native connected on both free throws to give Yeshiva the lead, 64-63.

Purchase called a timeout and advanced the ball to the front court. The ball came loose after the inbound pass and Teigman dove to the floor to secure it and was fouled. She intentionally tried to miss the second free throw but committed a lane violation, resulting in a turnover. The Panthers once again called a timeout to advance the ball to the front court.

The inbound pass was intercepted by Teigman, and the buzzer sounded, securing the Skyline win for Yeshiva.

For the Maccabees, sophomore forward Mahlia Leventhal brought down 10 rebounds, while Orgel finished with nine points, four assists, and three rebounds.

For the Panthers, sophomore guard Shadai Plowden had 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

The Maccabees will host the Rams of Farmingdale State College on Saturday evening, at the ARC Arena, beginning at 8:00 p.m. It will be Senior night as Yeshiva University will honor graduating seniors, Ellie ParkerChana WeinbergLeah Shulman, Boltax, Teigman, and Rosenberg with a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
