Yeshiva Drops Skyline Game to Purchase College

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team suffered a setback, dropping its Skyline game to Purchase College by a score of 75-68, at the Purchase College Gymnasium on Thursday evening. The Maccabees fall to 5-11 overall and 3-9 in Skyline play. The Panthers bump their record to 3-15 for the season and 2-11 against league competition.

Leading the way for the Maccabees was senior forward Tehilla Teigman, who produced a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. The Houston native shot 9-for-17 from the field. Freshman guard Yuval Nitzan tallied 15 points, distributed seven assists, grabbed three rebounds, and forced a pair of steals.

After falling behind, 5-0, early, Yeshiva rallied with five unanswered points to tie the game. Later in the opening quarter, senior guard Adina Rosenberg forced a steal and found Teigman, who converted a fast break layup to give the Blue and White a 9-7 advantage. A little while after, sophomore guard Jessie Orgel fed the ball to Teigman, who nailed a jumper to put YU back in front by a score of 13-12, with 3:21 left to play in the quarter. The Panthers finished the period with a 6-2 run to take a three-point lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Maccabees fell behind by eight in the early stages of the second stanza, but a layup from Nitzan capped off a 6-0 run to pull YU to within two, at 23-21, with 6:18 left in the half. After Yeshiva pulled to within one, Orgel put YU in front thanks to a successful 3-point shot that made it 26-24. After Purchase tied it, senior guard Leah Shulman forced a steal and found Orgel, who executed a fast break layup to allow YU to regain the lead, at 28-26, with less than four minutes left in the half. The Panthers rallied to take a 35-31 advantage. With Yeshiva down by three in the closing seconds, sophomore forward Jennie Mellman took a feed from Shulman and nailed a jump shot with two ticks left on the clock to narrow the Panthers' advantage to 35-34. That would be the score at halftime.

First-year forward Mahlia Leventhal opened the third quarter with a jumper to put YU in front, 36-35. However, the Panthers scored five straight points to take the lead again. Teigman got Yeshiva back on track by draining a jumper, while being fouled to pull Yeshiva to within 49-47. She added the free throw to complete the three-point play and narrow the deficit to one. However, Purchase finished the quarter with 11 straight points to take a commanding 60-48 hold after 30 minutes of action.

The Maccabees would not go down without a fight, scoring the first eight points of the final period of regulation to pull to within four. Teigman concluded the run with a layup off a feed from Nitzan. Yeshiva rallied again later in the stanza, as Orgel's steal leading to Teigman's layup capped off a 6-0 YU run to even the game at 62 points apiece. After junior guard Dejeana People nailed a 3-point shot to put the home team in front, Teigman converted a layup to shrink the Macs' deficit to one, with 2:16 to go. However, the Panthers countered with five straight points to earn more breathing room, at 70-64, with 1:14 left to play. Yeshiva could not generate a run to get back into it, as Purchase was able to hit key free throws during the final minute to clinch the Skyline victory, 75-68.

For the Maccabees, Orgel scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds. Leventhal had six points with nine boards, while Rosenberg added six points with three steals. Junior forward Lindsay Brandwein added six points with a pair of rebounds, just as many assists, and two steals. Mellman had three rebounds, while sophomore forward Elizabeth Pavel grabbed a pair of caroms.

For the Panthers, sophomore guard Shadai Plowden tied a game-high with 24 points, while clutching eight rebounds. Senior forward Arta Krasniqi had a double-double with 18 points and 13 boards. Peoples produced 14 points to go along with six rebounds.

Yeshiva will host Manhattanville College, in a Skyline matchup at the ARC Arena, on Saturday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
