Stormy Petrels notch 20th win in 91-49 rout of Hendrix

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team recorded its 20th win of the season Friday night, marking the fewest games required to accomplish that feat in the history of the program, with a 91-49 romp over the homestanding Hendrix Warriors in Conway, Arkansas. The Stormy Petrels, at 20-1 overall, extended their winning streak to 18 games and stayed perfect at 10-0 in SAA play.

The two teams played the first quarter fairly evenly, with Oglethorpe leading 24-20 after 10 minutes. The Petrels led by as many as 8 points, 18-10, with 3:10 remaining in the period, but Hendrix came back with a 10-4 stretch to cut it to 22-20 with 13 seconds left.

The Petrels started to pull away in the second quarter, though. They went on a 14-0 run over 3:55 to burst out to a 38-23 lead with 5:30 left in the first half, then followed up with a 10-1 stretch over the final 3:30 of the quarter to take a 48-29 lead into the break. They continued to push the lead in the third quarter, starting another 10-1 run and extending their advantage to 58-32 with 6:35 left in the third quarter. The visitors then ended the period on a 12-0 run to take a 72-37 lead into the fourth. The Petrels outscored the Warriors 24-9 in the second quarter and 24-8 in the third.

Oglethorpe cruised to the victory from there, ending the game with their largest lead of 42 points.

Junior guard Taylor Smith led the way for the Petrels with 12 points on 5-of-10 from the field and nine rebounds. Junior center Savannah LeGate added 14 points on 4-of-8 from the field and nine rebounds of her own, while sophomore guard Nikki Reed poured in 14 points of her own.

The Petrels shot 42.7 percent from the field while holding the Warriors to just 27.6 percent. Oglethorpe also shot 75 percent from the foul line, making 21 free throws to nine for Hendrix. The visitors outrebounded the home side 54-39, while outscoring them 28-6 off turnovers and tallying 23 takeaways. Oglethorpe also outscored Hendrix 38-13 in the paint, 12-3 on the fast break, and 42-23 off the bench.

Oglethorpe next heads to Memphis, Tennessee, where they'll take on second-place Rhodes in an SAA showdown Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern.
