Cortland Women Win 67-46 at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Cortland women's basketball team consistently increased its lead in the second half and the Red Dragons defeated host Potsdam, 67-46, in SUNYAC play.
 
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) and Beth Bonin (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) each scored 18 points for Cortland, which improved to 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the SUNYAC with its 13th straight victory. Longford shot 8-for-13 from the floor, led the Red Dragons with nine rebounds, and tied her career best with three assists. Bonin made four 3-pointers and finished with five rebounds and four assists.
 
Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) added eight points, including two 3-pointers, and six rebounds. Jess Womble (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills East) scored five points and tied her career highs with four assists and two steals.
 
Potsdam (6-9, 3-6 SUNYAC) was led by Dyamon Hunter and Devyn Elliott with 12 points each. Jakia Howard paced the Bears with 13 rebounds, followed by Elliott with 11 boards, and Hunter handed out four assists.
 
Cortland led 23-9 after one quarter, but Potsdam got back as close as four points at 30-26 with 1:13 left in the half. The Red Dragons, however, scored six of the final eight points in the period on 3-pointers by Longford and Travers and held a 36-28 halftime lead.
 
Leading 38-32, Cortland went on an 8-0 run on 3-pointers by Meghan Flanagan (Rochester/Brighton) and Bonin and a layup by Sarah Tully (East Aurora) over a three-plus minute span to go up 46-32 with 4:58 left in the third. Cortland's lead remained in double figures the rest of the game.
 
Cortland held Potsdam to 28 percent shooting from the floor overall and 19 percent (4-of-21) from 3-point range. The Red Dragons connected on 40 percent of their shots overall and 32 percent (11-of-34) from the arc.
 
Cortland returns to action next weekend with games at Fredonia Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Buffalo State Saturday at 4 p.m. (Note that the women's games next weekend will be the second games of the doubleheaders due to a change made by Fredonia due to an event they are hosting.)
