Guard Lauren Newman delivered the avalanche of points right away for the Hope College women's basketball team on Saturday.

The junior from Flushing, Michigan (Flushing HS) did not miss a shot during the opening 10 minutes as they sparked the third-ranked Flying Dutch to a 76-41 victory at Saint Mary's College.

Newman, pictured, scored all 10 of her points during the first quarter and propelled Hope to a 27-11 lead. She sank two 3-pointers and made two layups.

The Flying Dutch never trailed as they upped their unbeaten record to 17-0 overall and 7-0 in MIAA play.

Newman was one of four Hope players to score in double figures.

Three of her teammates in the starting lineup netted 13 points apiece.

Junior center Olivia Voskuil of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) shot 75 percent from the field (6-8) and made her one free-throw attempt.

Junior guard Sydney Muller of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian) finished 67 percent from the field (4-6) and buried all four of her foul shots. She also was credited with a team-high five assists.

Junior guard Kenedy Schoonveld of Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian) also chipped in 13 points.

Hope, NCAA Division III's top scoring defense, held Saint Mary's to 28.3 percent shooting from the floor (15-53). It is the fourth time this season an opponent has finished under 30 percent.

Giavanna Paradiso, the MIAA's second-leading scorer, was held to seven points — 10 under her scoring average. No one reached double figures for the Belles (6-10, 3-4 MIAA).

The Flying Dutch's next game is Wednesday, January 22 at 7:30 p.m. against Alma College at DeVos Fieldhouse.

It is the Purple Community game that benefits Van Andel Institute.
