Drew women's basketball downs FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's basketball team scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back, downing cross-town rival FDU-Florham 80-59 in a non-conference affair Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

Junior guard Julia Ramos led all scorers with 23 points and dished out five assists for the Rangers (9-3), who continued their best start in 10 years. Freshman guard Joey Meyers posted her first career double-double with 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds while junior center Erin Frederick notched 14 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Cecelia Kracht contributed six points, eight rebounds, and a career-high five blocked shots - all of which came in the first half.

The Rangers used some stout defense to open up their big early lead, shutting out FDU over the opening 4:49. Kracht swatted four shots during the stretch, and the hosts led 18-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Drew put together a 16-2 run spanning the first and second quarters to assume a 20-point lead (31-11) with 5:30 left in the opening half. Five different Rangers scored during the spurt. Drew led by as much as 23 before taking a 40-22 advantage into the locker room.

FDU pulled to within 17 in the third quarter, but that's as close as it would get. The Rangers led 62-44 at the end of the third quarter and would see their lead swell to as much as 28 late in the game.

Drew held the Devils to 28.6% shooting, forced FDU into 20 turnovers, and out-rebounded the visitors 52-45.

The Rangers return to action next Saturday, when they host Juniata College at 4 p.m. in a Landmark Conference affair.
