The No. 19 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team closed the non-conference season and the 2019 calendar year Monday with a 75-69 triumph over No. 17 St. Thomas (Minn.) in a non-conference contest at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

The Warhawks (10-1 overall), who extended their winning streak to eight games, outscored the Tommies 19-6 at the free-throw line, held a 15-6 advantage on offensive rebounds and forced 23 turnovers, which led to a 25-14 margin in points off turnovers.

Senior guard Becky Raeder posted a game-high 21 points, including 10-of-12 from the free-throw line, and added two steals. Junior center Johanna Taylor registered a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds while adding four assists, and junior guard Rebekah Schumacher collected 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

UW-Whitewater scored the first seven points of the game and held a 16-7 advantage eight minutes into the first quarter following a layup by Taylor. St. Thomas (7-3) hit a 3-pointer on its final possession to make it a six-point game by the end of the period.

The Warhawks' lead reached double digits early in the second quarter after a jumper by Raeder and free throws by sophomore guard Veronica Kieres pushed the score to 22-10 with 8:35 on the clock.

The Tommies drew to within five by the 6:14 mark, but five straight points by Raeder doubled the UW-W lead near the midway point of the quarter. Raeder's jumper with seven seconds left in the half gave the Warhawks a 37-25 lead.

The Warhawks continued their double-digit lead midway through the third quarter, leading 43-33 following a pair of free throws by senior guard Megan Corcoran. From there, St. Thomas put together a 15-2 run to take a 48-45 advantage with 36 seconds to go in the period.

Taylor scored the next eight UW-Whitewater points over the next one minute, 20 seconds of game action to give the team a 53-50 lead with 9:01 remaining in the fourth.

Following a layup by freshman forward Aleah Grundahl with 6:11 on the clock, the Warhawks' lead remained at two or more possessions until the final minute, when a UST 3-pointer brought the Tommies within two with 23 seconds to go.

Raeder hit 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the final 16 seconds of regulation to help UW-Whitewater seal the win.

The Warhawks open the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season Saturday against UW-Eau Claire on Fort Atkinson/Milton Community Day at Kachel Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
