Strong Fourth Quarter Not Enough for Yeshiva Against Merchant Marine

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team dropped its Skyline Conference contest to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 70-43, at Liebertz Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The second-place Mariners advance to 15-1 in Skyline play (19-2 overall), while the Maccabees drop to 3-13 in the conference and 6-16 for the season.

Senior guard Nicole Bick scored a team-high 15 points for the Maccabees, while sophomore guard Adina Rosenbergproduced eight points with five rebounds. Senior forward Michal Alge netted six points and clutched seven boards, while sophomore forward Lindsay Brandwein also scored six points go along with five caroms. Freshman forward Elizabeth Pavel scored four points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.

USMMA had the edge on the boards, 51-39.

The home team never trailed at any point in the game. Alge scored all six of her points in the first 4:05 of the contest, including her third layup of the game that narrowed the Mariners' lead to 10-8. However, USMMA outscored YU, 14-4, the rest of the quarter to take a commanding 24-12 lead after 10 minutes of play. Merchant Marine steadily increased its lead throughout the second and third periods.

Yeshiva once again finished the game strong, outscoring the opposition by a 20-11 margin in the fourth quarter. Bick began the stanza by converting a layup, while being fouled. She added a shot from the charity stripe to complete the traditional three-point play. In the closing seconds of the period, Pavel grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a layup to close out YU's strong play in the final quarter.

For the afternoon, sophomore guard Chana Boltax scored four points, while junior forward Tehilla Teigman and second-year guard Leah Shulman each grabbed a carom.

For USMMA, five players scored in double-figures. Junior guard Kaleigh D'Arcy just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Kiana Vega and junior forward Taylor Hightower each produced 11 points, with the latter bringing down seven boards. Freshman guard Julia Dahlke and junior forward Shelby Peters each generated 10 points.

Yeshiva will host Purchase College, at the ARC Arena, on Tuesday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. It will be senior night, as graduating seniors Penny Rabin, Bick, and Alge will be honored with a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
