Meadville, PA – Senior Olivia Canning became the ninth player in the history of Oberlin College women's basketball to score 1,000 points as she helped the Yeowomen defeat the Allegheny College Gators, 52-22, on Wednesday evening at the newly named Mullen Arena.
 
The historic night was even more special for the Sudbury, Massachusetts, native as she registered her first-career triple-double with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 blocked shots in 31 minutes of work. Canning heads into Saturday's Senior Day with 1,004 points. Tonight's effort marked the second time in her career she recorded 10 blocks as she raised her school-record total to 337.
 
Cheyenne Arthur aided the Yeowomen effort with 10 points and five assists, while Maggie Gross matched Alex Stipano with eight points to accompany her nine boards and career-high six blocks.
 
After a sluggish start on both sides that featured just seven combined points through the first seven minutes of play, Oberlin closed the frame with a 7-0 run to carry a 10-7 lead into the second quarter.
 
With just under seven minutes left in the half, a 3-pointer from Stipano increased the Yeowomen cushion out to 15-9. Oberlin was later clinging to a seven-point lead but the final points of the session came courtesy of an Arthur triple-hit and a Tyler Collins' jumper to make it a 25-13 Yeowomen advantage at the intermission.
 
The second half was completely controlled by the Yeowomen as they held the Gators to just nine points over the final 20 minutes of play. Oberlin led 29-17 midway through the third quarter but the Gators would go scoreless for nearly eight minutes and give the Yeowomen a chance to break the game wide open.  Canning's 1,000-point bucket with 1:21 left in the third gave the Yeowomen their first 20-point lead of the night and left no doubt in the eventual outcome.
 
Oberlin's defense recorded eight steals, 16 blocks, and held Allegheny to just eight field goals on 56 shot attempts for a 14.3 percent clip.
 
The Yeowomen also didn't have their best shooting performance as they finished at 30 percent (18-of-60) from the floor and were just 11-of-20 (55%) at the free throw line. However, Oberlin won the battle of the boards 49-42 and outscored the Gators 20-8 in the paint.
 
Oberlin will honor both Canning and Stipano following their final regular-season home game against Hiram College on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
