UW-Whitewater Upends No. 11 UW-Oshkosh

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team won its sixth consecutive game and moved to within one game of first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Monday night with a 78-70 triumph over No. 11 ranked UW-Oshkosh at Kachel Gymnasium.

 

The Warhawks (14-7 overall, 7-3 WIAC) are tied in second place with UW-La Crosse and now trail the Titans (18-3, 8-2) by one game in the standings after completing a season sweep.

 

Trailing by nine points early in the fourth quarter, UW-Whitewater chipped away at its deficit, drawing to within three points with 6:37 to play following a jumper by senior forward Sarah Schumacher, her third make in the quarter.

 

The Warhawks drew to within one midway through the frame, but trailed 60-54 two minutes later and 63-57 one minute later following a 3-point play by UW-Oshkosh.

 

Junior guard Camri Conley converted a jumper, senior forward Olivia Freckmann hit a pair of free throws and Conley hit another jumper as UW-Whitewater held the Titans scoreless on the other end. Both teams had 3-point looks in the final 10 seconds of regulation, but neither was able to convert.

 

The Warhawks scored the first eight points of the extra period, highlighted by back-to-back jumpers by sophomore guard Emily Schumacher, to take a 71-63 advantage with 1:52 on the clock.

 

The Titans got as close as two, but UW-Whitewater hit 6-of-6 from the free-throw line over the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.

 

Emily Schumacher tallied a team-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds and two steals, while Freckmann posted her fifth straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four assists. Sarah Schumacher registered 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Conley recorded 16 points and two steals.

 

The Warhawks shot 48.3 percent from the floor and hit 17-of-26 from the free-throw line while holding UW-Oshkosh to 40 percent from the floor, including 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) in overtime.

 

Neither team led by more than five in the first quarter as UW-Whitewater overcame a 7-2 deficit and took its first lead of the game at the 1:46 mark, an 18-16 advantage following a jumper by Conley. The Titans converted a 3-point play on the other end to take the lead into the second quarter.

 

The two teams traded the lead over the first three-plus minutes of the second, and five straight points by Sarah Schumacher gave the Warhawks a 28-24 lead.

 

The two teams combined for two points over the next six minutes, 45 seconds, and UW-Whitewater took a 28-26 halftime lead.

 

The teams traded the lead over the first half of the third quarter before UW-Oshkosh ended the period on an 8-3 run to stretch out to a 48-42 advantage. The Titans converted a 3-point play on the first possession of the fourth quarter before the Warhawks made their comeback.

 

UW-Whitewater plays its third game in five days Wednesday as it visits UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
