Savage Delivers a Dozen as WPI Triumphs Over Mount Holyoke

WORCESTER – Freshman Bailey Savage (Charlton, MA) shared game-high honors with 12 points as WPI defeated visiting Mount Holyoke, 49-26, in a NEWMAC women's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium.

Junior Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) and freshman McKenna Finken (Simsbury, CT) each tallied eight points as Savage and sophomore Sara Lyons (Pittsford, NY) each chipped in with three assists. Savage (career-best 4 steals, 2 blocks) and Vinson (career-high 5 blocks) combined for 11 rebounds while Finken and classmate Victoria Mirecki (Rock Tavern, NY) chipped in with four boards. Sophomore Caitlin Boermeester (Billerica, MA) totaled a career-best five steals for the Engineers.

Sophomore Annika Brooks (Portland, ME) delivered a dozen points for the Lyons, as well as, a game-high eight rebounds and three steals. Senior Leah Hodges (New Haven, CT) handed in six points and three rebounds to go with a block and two swipes. First-year Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, MA) and senior Zahkeyah Allen (Philadelphia, PA) combined for 11 rebounds in the effort.

Hodges snapped a game-opening 8-0 run by the hosts with a jumper with 5:13 to go in the first. Sophomore Paloma Cruz (Point Richmond, CA) later guaranteed the Lyons were not shutout in the second, while also sparking a 6-0 spurt, with a jumper with 2:29 left until the intermission.

Back-to-Back threes by Mirecki and Finken late in the third gave the Crimson and Gray a 17-point cushion. The lead ballooned to 23 point advantage with 1:57 to play. Brooks cut the margin to 21 but freshman Eileen Piombino (Westchester, PA) hit a pair of free throws for the 49-26 final.

WPI (7-5, 2-3 NEWMAC) entertains Smith at 7pm on Tuesday while Mount Holyoke hosts Coast Guard Thursday, also at 7pm.
