UNION, N.J. – Senior guard CeCe Green's (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) game-high 15 points led a trio of Pioneers in double figures as the William Paterson women's basketball team (7-7, 3-4) rallied from a 10-point deficit with just under 14 minutes remaining to stun Kean (6-8, 3-4 NJAC), 54-46, and secure a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road victory Jan. 5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Tied 10-10 midway through the first quarter, Julie Rovito's (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park)fastbreak layup capped off a 6-0 Pioneer burst that gave the visitors a slim 17-14 edge after 10 minutes. In the second stanza, shooting struggles doomed the Pioneers as WP connected on just 2-of-11 field-goal attempts (.182) and was outscored 15-5 as the Cougars entered the locker room with seven-point cushion, 29-22.
  • Back-to-back buckets by Green and Brianna Brooks (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) got the Pioneers to within three (33-30, 5:53), but Kean took advantage of a trio of William Paterson turnovers and pushed its lead to 10 points, 43-33, at the 1:57 mark of the third quarter. Beginning with Vianca Soriano's (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) mid-range jumper on the game's next possession, WP would score 21 of the game's final 24 points and hold the Cougars to just three fourth quarter points to complete an impressive comeback and come away with the 54-46 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Green's 15 points led all scorers, while Rovito's 13-point, 10-rebound effort was her first double-double of the season. Soriano notched her fifth double-digit scoring output of the season, collecting 10 tallies to go along with eight rebounds.
  • WP held Kean to just 25.4 percent (16-67) shooting from the field including just 1-for-15 in the momentum-shifting fourth quarter.  The Pioneers were exceptionally strong guarding the perimeter, as the Cougars could only connect on 2-of-30 (.067) attempts from beyond the arc.

UP NEXT:

  • WP returns to the Sports & Recreation Center on Wednesday, Jan. 9, for a 6:00 p.m. showdown with The College of New Jersey.
