The Oglethorpe women's basketball team got a tough game from the North Park Vikings Saturday afternoon at Dorough Field House, as the visitors held the Stormy Petrels to just 27.9 percent from the field overall and 4-for-23 from 3-point range. The Petrels prevailed in the end, though, toughing out a 50-47 win to improve to 10-2 on the season.

North Park tied the game at 40-apiece headed to the fourth quarter, and the Petrels fell behind by a point early in the period for the Vikings' first lead of the contest. Oglethorpe went on a quick 6-0 run, though, as a layup from freshman guard Nikki Reed was followed quickly by a made jump shot from senior forward Lauren Ransom. On North Park's next trip down the floor, Ransom picked up one of her four blocks, leading to a layup from senior Bailey Charles at the other end and a 46-41 Petrel advantage with 7:40 to go.

The Vikings responded with six straight points, though, and edged ahead 47-46 with just 4:30 remaining in the game. Senior guard Brooke Simpson responded quickly and vaulted Oglethorpe back ahead 48-47 with 3:30 left, and then a beautiful pass from Ransom worked sophomore forward Savannah LeGate open for a basket to make it 50-47 with just over two minutes remaining. The teams traded misses, but North Park had the ball with under 10 seconds left and a chance to tie. Their 3-point shot missed with seven seconds to go, though, and the Petrels ran out the clock for the victory.

Oglethorpe built a big lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Vikings 10-2 over the opening five minutes and 18-8 over the period overall. North Park responded by outscoring Oglethorpe 18-12 over the second period and 32-22 over the middle two periods combined. 

LeGate flirted with a triple double, scoring 13 points, grabbing 17 rebounds, and recording eight blocks. Ransom finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for a double double of her own, as she shot 4-for-5 from the line. Simpson scored five points and passed out three assists.

The Petrels will be back in action next weekend. They'll get back to SAA play with a trip to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on Birmingham-Southern at 7 p.m. Eastern on Friday and then continue to Jackson, Mississippi, to go against Millsaps at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6.
