Yeshiva Falls to New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team suffered a setback on Wednesday evening, falling to College of New Rochelle by a score of 83-66, at the Wellness Center. The Blue Angels advance to 2-10, while the Maccabees drop to 6-8.

Leading the way for Yeshiva was senior forward Michal Alge, who produced a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. The Boston native also dished out a game-high seven assists. Senior forward Nicole Bick produced a team-high 18 points with four rebounds, while sophomore forward Lindsay Brandwein had 10 points, clutched seven boards, and distributed a pair of assists. Second-year guard Chana Boltax nailed three shots from beyond the arc.

New Rochelle scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back. Bick put the Maccabees on the board with a 3-point field goal, 6:03 into the contest. Yeshiva fell behind by as many as 14 in the period, but a pair of free throws by Alge capped off a 4-0 run by YU to finish the quarter. New Rochelle took a 20-10 lead into the second stanza.

YU fell behind by as many as 18 in the second quarter, but the Maccabees scored 10 unanswered points to pull to within eight. Freshman forward Elizabeth Pavel capped off the run with a layup to narrow New Rochelle's lead to 32-24, with 1:52 remaining in the half. With 11 seconds to go until the break, freshman guard Julee Martinez, of CNR, converted a layup off a fast break to send both teams into the locker rooms with the score 36-24 in favor of the Blue Angels.

New Rochelle went up by as many as 17 in the third, but the Maccabees slowly chipped away at their deficit. Alge nailed a jump shot to pull YU to within 11, at 45-34, with 2:21 remaining in the stanza. After the Blue Angels increased their lead to 16, the Macs scored the last four points of the quarter, capped off by a layup from Pavel with 12 seconds remaining to narrow YU's deficit to 50-38 after 30 minutes of play.

Sophomore guard Adina Rosenberg successfully executed a layup to shrink New Rochelle's lead to 10, at 53-43, with 8:01 remaining in regulation time. The Maccabees could not generate a run to get the game closer the rest of the way, as New Rochelle went on to earn the non-conference victory by a score of 83-66.

For the game, Rosenberg scored six points with two boards, while Pavel brought down seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Celia Cohen had four points, a rebound, and a pair of steals. Senior guard Penny Rabin brought down three caroms and collected a pair of steals, while sophomore guard Leah Shulman and junior guard Rachel Kahen each grabbed a rebound.

For New Rochelle, senior guard Aaliyah Fields led all players with 24 points, added four assists, and forced three steals, while junior guard Dar'Neisha Brice produced 19 points with four rebounds and three dimes.

Yeshiva will host Goucher College on Sunday, December 30, at the ARC Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
