PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Kayleah McGuire and sophomore Sarah Coutu both recorded season-highs in points with 22 and 19, respectively for the Manhattanville College women's basketball team on Saturday, Dec. 8. The duo combined for nearly half of Manhattanville's points in an 83-50 victory over the Wilkes University Colonels in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action.

McGuire was eight-for-13 from the field, shot a season best 87.5 percent (six-for-seven) from the foul line and became the 16th Valiant in program to surpass 1,000 points after converting a layup with 7:11 left in the game. Coutu had season-highs in steals (nine) and assists (seven) to go with her 19 for Manhattanville (8-0, 2-0 MACF). Sophomore Spencer Shore joined McGuire and Coutu in double figures with a season-high 11 and freshman Jada Rencher added a season-high nine points in just 17 minutes off the bench. Gabby Smicherko finished with 10 points, the only player in double figures for Wilkes (3-7, 0-2 MACF).

Manhattanville scored 11 of the game's first 14 points, four of those coming from McGuire. Wilkes briefly trimmed the deficit to six, but the Valiants closed the quarter with seven of the final nine points, four coming in the final 10 seconds following a lay-up by freshman Faith Johnson-DeSilvia and a lay-up from Coutu, who stole the in-bounds pass following Johnson-DeSilvia's lay-up.

The McGuire-Coutu-Shore trio combined for all 17 of Manhattanville's points in the second quarter – seven from McGuire, six from Coutu, and four from Shore – as the Valiants forced 10 turnovers in the period, maintaining their 11-point lead at the end of the half, 37-26.

Pressure defense from the Valiants continued in the third quarter, as the Colonels were held to just eight shots while committing seven turnovers. Offensively, the Valiants put 26 on the board in the third, opening up a 28-point lead heading to the fourth quarter.

McGuire opened the scoring for Manhattanville at 8:55 of the final quarter with her 999th career point on a layup assisted by freshman Ali Mikaele – who finished with six points and seven rebounds herself. Just under two minutes later, McGuire surpassed the mark, setting off a raucous roar from the Manhattanville bench. Rencher was the star of the game's final minutes, scoring a pair of layups off offensive rebounds, again sending the Valiant bench into a frenzy.

The Valiants will enjoy a nine-day break before returning to the court Monday, Dec. 17 on the road against the Panthers of the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford. Tip time for that game is 12 p.m.
