Stone Records Third Double Double, Blues Dominate Willamette

More news about: Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Makana Stone recorded her third double with 20 points and 12 rebounds and the Whitman College women's basketball team responded after a slow start to cap a perfect Northwest Conference opening weekend with a 75-33 win over Willamette, Saturday evening at the Sherwood Center.

Mady Burdett added nine points and four assists for the Blues (5-2, 2-0 NWC) whose 33 points allowed equaled a season low. Maegen Martin added an overall solid performance with eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

Britanny Kochenderfer led Willamette (3-5, 0-2 NWC) with 17 points on 7-15 shooting while adding eight rebounds.

It was a slow start for both teams to open the game. Whitman had difficulties getting into its offense while Willamette missed on a handful of open looks in the paint. Stone's work on both ends was the difference in the period though as she grabbed five rebounds to go along with a block.

The second quarter saw complete dominance by the Blues with layups from Taylor Chambers and Kaelan Shamseldin capping an 18-0 run to begin the period. Outscoring Willamette 27-6 in the quarter, Whitman entered halftime up 24 with Stone nearly recording her double double before the teams headed to the locker room.

The Blues didn't give an inch after the break en route to making the fourth quarter a formality and securing the win. Elizabeth Lodgsdon scored and assisted on a three pointer to open the period but Whitman responded with an 8-0 run capped by a Martin layup.

The Blues return to action next week hosting their annual Kim Evanger Raney Classic. Whitman faces Colorado College on Friday and Thomas More on Saturday.
