Rochester Rides Big Third Quarter to Victory Over Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Rochester used balanced scoring and a huge third quarter to claim its first victory of the women's basketball season on Tuesday night. The Yellowjackets defeated SUNY Oswego, 62-46, at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Oswego.
 
Lena Ethington led the Yellowjacket scorers with 14 points. She added six rebounds and two steals. Julianna Okoniewski scored 12 points and led Rochester on the glass. She grabbed eight rebounds. She also blocked two shots and made two steals. Jamie Boeheim scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Ally Forness had nine points.
 
Camryn Fagan, in her first varsity start, had six assists versus two turnovers. She produced two steals and scored two points. Lauren Foley had two points and three rebounds. Breanna James had four steals.
 
Oswego's scoring leader was Samantha Britton with 15 points to accompany three rebounds. Rachael Windhausen scored 10 points with six boards and Quincey Zimmerman had nine points and nine rebounds.

Rochester hit 28 of 74 shots overall (.378). The Yellowjackets were 2-7 beyond the arc. Oswego made 19 of 57 floor shots (.333) and two of nine from distance (.222). The Lakers held a 47-43 edge on the glass.
 
UR turned 13 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points. Oswego had 12 boards at its own end of the floor, scoring eight points.
 
Rochester did a fairly good job hanging on to the ball – 10 turnovers which led to six points for the hosts. Oswego gave up the ball 24 times, leading to 16 UR points.
 
With Ethington scoring eight points in the first quarter, Rochester held a small (13-8) edge through one period. Oswego stayed within striking distance in the second period and the UR lead was still that same five-point margin at halftime (30-25).
 
The game turned in the first six minutes of the third period. Oswego hit just one of seven from the field in that stretch and lost the ball twice. Rochester connected on six of nine floor shots, one outside the arc. In all, the 13-2 run opened a 43-27 lead. Forness scored four of the 13 UR points as did Ethington.
 
Rochester's record is 1-4. Oswego slipped to 1-3. The Yellowjackets return to the Palestra in one week to take on the College at Brockport on Tuesday evening at 6 pm. A men's game between UR and Geneseo will follow at 8 pm.
