NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team earned a victory in its Skyline Conference opener over Sarah Lawrence College, 87-63, at the ARC Arena on Monday evening. YU is now 1-0 in the conference and has won three out of four games to start the season. Sarah Lawrence drops to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Skyline play.

The Maccabees had balanced scoring, as four players reached double-figures. Senior forward Michal Algeproduced a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. The Boston native dished out five assists and forced three steals. Sophomore forward Tehilla Teigman and senior guard Nicole Bick each scored 17 points, with the former bringing down seven rebounds and forcing five steals, while the latter clutched six caroms and dished out three dimes. Sophomore forward Celia Cohen had a solid game with 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

"This team is working really hard," Yeshiva University head coach Michael Alon said. "I am impressed with how the players are continuing to improve with each passing game."

Yeshiva led the contest from wire-to-wire. In the opening quarter, Teigman successfully converted a layup to put Yeshiva up, 7-0, 2:15 into the contest. After the Gryphons pulled to within two, the Maccabees countered with 10 unanswered points to take a commanding 17-5 advantage, with 4:35 remaining in the opening period. The highlight of Yeshiva's 10-0 run was Alge grabbing an offensive board and laying the ball up and in, on two separate occasions. The first quarter ended with Yeshiva up, 26-12.

The home team scored the first eight points of the second quarter, capped off by an offensive board and putback by sophomore forward Lindsay Brandwein, giving the Macs a commanding 34-12 lead. Later in the quarter, Cohen forced a steal and found Teigman, who performed a layup off a fast break to up Yeshiva's lead to 40-14, with 3:45 to go until the break. The first half ended with YU up, 42-18.

The Maccabees got off to a strong start in the third quarter, as a jump shot by Bick gave the home team a 52-22 benefit, less than three minutes in. The Macs also finished the quarter strong, as sophomore guard Adina Rosenberg drained a jump shot to give Yeshiva its largest lead at the time, 70-39.

In the final stanza, senior guard Penny Rabin forced a steal and successfully executed a layup off a fast break to give the Maccabees their largest lead of the evening, 76-43, with 6:57 left to play. The Gryphons would chip away for the remainder of the period, but it would not be enough as the Macs earned the Skyline opening win.

For the game, Brandwein added nine points with eight rebounds and three assists. Rosenberg also scored nine points and went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Rabin clutched seven rebounds to go along with four points, while sophomore guard Chana Boltax grabbed five caroms, scored three points, had just as many assists, and forced three steals.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Pavel produced two points, grabbed two rebounds, collected two steals, and blocked a shot. Sophomore guard Leah Shulman had two points with a pair of steals, while sophomore guard Tova Mamannadded two points of her own. Junior forward Ellie Parker brought down three caroms, while first-year guard Rachel Kahen and sophomore guard Lauren Rudberg each grabbed one.

During warmups, the women's basketball team wore "Stronger Than Hate" shirts to honor the victims who lost their lives at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Yeshiva will return to Skyline action next Tuesday, with a matchup against St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, at the ARC Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
