Warhawk Women Advance to NCAA Second Round

The University of Wisconsin- Whitewater women's basketball team downed UW-Superior, 81-46, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday night at Kachel Gymnasium.

 

With the win, the Warhawks (25-3 overall) advance to Saturday's second round and will face Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), a 60-52 winner over Rose-Hulman (Ind.), at 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.

 

Senior guard Malia Smith sank a 3-pointer in the third quarter to eclipse 1,000 points for her career and is now the 17th Warhawk in women's basketball history to reach the scoring plateau.

 

UW-Whitewater held UW-Superior to 30.5 percent in the game and outrebounded the Yellowjackets 48-31.

 

Senior guard Brooke Trewyn led the Warhawks with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.  Smith tallied 15 points and two assists and junior forward Olivia Freckmann recorded 13 points and eight rebounds.

 

UW-Whitewater started the game on an 8-0 run that included a layup from Trewyn in the first 10 seconds of play.

 

UW-Superior came within four, but the Warhawks responded with six straight points to make the score 14-4.

 

With just under a minute in the first period, Smith finished the layup and earned a trip to the line and converted a 3-point play.

 

The Warhawks came out on fire in the second quarter and went on a 12-2 run that was concluded with a 3-pointer from Smith to make the score 31-9.

 

Senior forward Andrea Meinert found sophomore guard Becky Raeder behind the arc with 1:52 remaining in the half to give the UW-Whitewater a 22-point lead.

 

The Warhawks held UW-Superior to 25 percent shooting on the floor in the first half.

 

UW-Whitewater continued to extend its lead in the third quarter.  At 7:34 Meinert found Smith behind the arc and Smith sank the 3-pointer to give the Warhawks the lead 47-22.

 

Raeder found Freckmann inside, with 1:38 remaining in the period, to record another 3-point play for UW-Whitewater.

 

Two free-throws from sophomore Camri Conley with five seconds remaining in the third quarter accounted for the final margin of 64-34 going into the final period.

 

The Warhawks continued to extend the lead in the fourth.  Freshman guard Emily Schumacher sank a 3-pointer to give UW-Whitewater the lead at 71-36.

 

Freshman guard Rebekah Schumacher drained a 3-pointer with just under five minutes remaining in the game to give the Warhawks their largest lead of the game of 41.

 

Sophomore forward Morgan Rosencrants finished two free-throws and accounted for the final margin of the game.

 

The Warhawks shot 20-of-22 from the free throw line in the contest and sank nine 3-pointers from seven different players.
