Bearcats advance in PAC Playoffs with 68-44 win

The Bearcat women's basketball team was victorious in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference playoffs, defeating Bethany College by a score of 68-44 in the Carey Center.

Mara Benvenuti hit a three to open scoring at the 8:32 mark, and after two points from the Bison, Maria Morgan followed with a three to give the Bearcats a 6-2 lead.
 
The advantage grew to 13-4 before a free throw and a layup made it 13-7, but Kiara Arnold banked a jumper home off the glass to give the Bearcats a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
Bethany scored the first four points of the second quarter to make it 15-11, but the Bearcats came back with six straight points, thanks to strong play from Paige Montrose.  After hitting back to back jumpers, Montose came up with a steal that led to a score from Carlee Kilgus, giving SVC a 10-point lead, 21-11..
 
After the Bison ended the run, Lucy Bujdos hit a 15-foot jumper to run the lead back to ten.  The Bison later scored the final points of the half, as the teams went into the break with the Bearcats in front, 25-17.  Montrose led all scorers with 7 points in the first 20 minutes.
 
Morgan set the tone for the third quarter with a rare four-point play just 30 seconds into action.  As she released the ball for a successful three-pointer, she was fouled, went to the line and made the free throw to give SVC a 29-17 lead.
 
She added another three at the midway point of the quarter.  Babette Sanmartin later scored four straight points on back-to-back jumpers to give SVC a 45-27 lead, and the hosts led 47-28 after three quarters.
 
The fourth quarter belonged to SVC's Taylor Boring, as she hit a trio of three pointers in a span of just over two minutes, pushing the lead to 27 (60-33).  Boring added a reverse layup later in the quarter, as SVC pulled away to the 24-point victory.
 
Bethany's Kelsey Daughtery led all scorers with 15 points.  For the Bearcats, Morgan had 13 points, while Boring scored 12.  Montrose had a solid all-around game with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots.  Kilgus also had 6 rebounds.
 
Saint Vincent (18-8) advances to the PAC Semifinals, and will face second-seeded Washington & Jefferson College on Friday night at Thomas More. The two teams split the regular season contests, with each winning on their respective home courts.
