Hawks Cap Season With 81-48 Thrashing of Alfred

            ONEONTA, NY – For the second straight day, Hartwick's women's basketball team took the advantage less than 90 seconds into the game and led throughout in an 81-48 rout of visiting Alfred University (2-23, 0-16 E8) on Saturday at Lambros Arena.

            Four Hawks were in double figures, led by Carly Johnson's (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) 19 points. Mary Schoenherr (Unionville, CT/Farmington) netted 17 points, Alexa DuBois (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) equaled a season-high with 15, and Kelly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) scored 13.

            The Hawks were dominant in the first quarter as they opened on a 15-2 run to take command. A three from Johnson pushed the lead to 21 points, 26-5, before 'Wick settled on a 19-point, 26-7 edge after one quarter.

            The Hartwick advantage grew to as many as 23 points in the second quarter before taking a 39-19 edge into halftime. Johnson led the way with 13 first-half points.

            In the third, the Hawks led by at least 18 points and by as many as 29. Twenty-two points was as close as the Saxons would get in the fourth quarter and the final 33-point Hartwick margin was its biggest of the contest.

            The Hawks shot 46% from the floor and they held the edge in rebounds, 47-40. 'Wick held AU to 28% shooting and it forced 20 Saxon turnovers, which it converted into 27 points.

            Schoenherr would make six of her seven shots from the floor and all five of her free throws to go along with six assists, six steals, three blocks, and three rebounds. DuBois went 5-of-9 with six boards and three assists. Pine shot 5-of-7 from the floor and registered eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.

            Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) missed a double-double by a point. She scored nine, grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, and tied for a game-high six assists. Rhiannon Groll (Red Bank, NJ/Boonton) went 3-for-3 from the field for six points. Kelsey Collins (Forestburgh, NY/Eldred Central) grabbed seven rebounds.

            Alfred was led by Sam Pierre-Lois, who scored 12 points. Kaitlyn Boland added 11.

            The Hawks close out their season with three wins in their final four games and with an overall record of 8-17. They finish the Empire 8 slate with a 7-9 mark, good enough for six place in the standings.
