CORTLAND, N.Y. - McKenna Brooks converted a tiebreaking 3-point play with 2.8 seconds remaining and nationally 23rd-ranked Geneseo edged host Cortland, 68-67, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.

Cortland dropped to 14-10 overall and 11-6 in the SUNYAC with one regular-season game remaining Saturday at 1 p.m. at home versus Brockport. The Red Dragons can clinch third place in the SUNYAC with a win over the Golden Eagles. Cortland, however, would finish either fourth or fifth with a loss Saturday, depending on the outcome of New Paltz's game at Plattsburgh. The third and fourth-place teams host SUNYAC tournament first-round games Tuesday night.

Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) led Cortland with 16 points and added six rebounds and three assists. She was 8-of-14 from the floor. Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) made three of her five 3-point attempts and ended with 12 points and three assists. Alaina Lynch (Staten Island/Staten Island Tech) added 11 points and four assists, and Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) paced the Red Dragons with seven rebounds and five assists and also scored eight points.

Sara Ciotti led Geneseo (22-2, 17-0 SUNYAC) with 21 points. She hit 8-of-14 shots, including 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc. Lindsay Halpin totaled 16 points, including four treys, while Kelsey Poplawski and Alyssa Lesakowski tallied nine points each. Natalie Alfieri grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Cortland trailed by 11 early in the second quarter, but went on a 17-3 run to take a 30-27 lead with 3:25 left in the half. Geneseo, however, led 35-32 at halftime. Neither team led by more than three points in the third quarter, and McHugh's 3-pointer with 47 seconds left gave Cortland a 51-50 lead entering the final stanza.

The visiting Knights established a 63-57 lead on a Halpin 3-pointer with 4:19 left, and still led by six on Ciotti's layup with 3:45 remaining. Cortland closed to within one on a Lynch layup at the 3:30 mark and a Vitucci 3-pointer with 2:58 on the clock.

Neither team scored again until the final 10 seconds. Vitucci was fouled near the right corner with seven seconds left and, with Cortland in the bonus, she hit the first of two free throws to tie the game at 65-65. Geneseo rebounded a miss on the second attempt, called timeout with 5.6 seconds left and elected to advance the ball to the frontcourt.

Brooks entered the game as Geneseo's leading scorer for the season at 12.5 points per game but was held to two points up to that juncture. However, she took a feed from Lesakowski, hit a layup from the left side and was fouled. Her free throw gave the Knights a 68-65 lead.

Cortland called timeout and advanced the ball. The Red Dragons first two entry passes were knocked out of bounds by the Knights. The final one, with 1.5 seconds left, was caught by McHugh but all she was able to do was hit a 2-point jumper from the left baseline as time expired.

Cortland shot 44 percent from the floor compared to Geneseo's 42 percent. Each team was 8-for-21 from 3-point range. Geneseo, however, held a 20-6 advantage in "second-chance" points.
