WILMINGTON, Ohio — It was a historic day for the Marietta College women's basketball team. The Pioneers defeated Wilmington College, 81-73, Saturday (Feb. 10) afternoon improving to 20-3 overall and 13-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

With the victory, Marietta ties the 1989-90 team for the most wins in a single season. The Debbie Lazorik coached team finished 20-7 and featured All-American Cathy Clark Borich. This year's squad, led by head coach Kole Vivian, includes Clark's daughter, Brooke Borich.

The day was extra special for Borich as she joined her mother in Marietta's 1,000-point club. The senior drained a three-pointer with 3:55 left in the third quarter to reach the milestone. Borich becomes the 11th member of MC's women's basketball 1,000-point club. Clark is Marietta's and the OAC's all-time leading scorer with 2,311 career points.

"We are so happy for Brooke scoring her 1000th point. To do it on a big three-point shot was icing on the cake. Brooke has worked hard to become a better player each year and she deserves it," Vivian said. "And to tie the program record for wins in a season is really special. We have talked about making history all year and to be in the same conversation as the best women's basketball teams at MC is unreal."

Borich led four Pioneers in double figures with a game-high 18 points. Amisha Herd finished with 17 points, six rebounds, seven assists and seven steals. Corrie Burkhardt recorded 12 points and eight rebounds, while Marlo Taylor notched a career-high 11 points.

Maddie Snider led Wilmington with 15 points. Mackenzie Campbell posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, while Faith Teaford added 10 points.

"Things were looking rough for us midway through the third quarter but we stayed together and finished the period on a big run," Vivian said. "Then when times were getting tough in the fourth quarter we were able to dig deep. OAC road wins are never easy, so finishing 6-3 on the road in this league is an accomplishment."

Marietta held a small lead for all but the final seconds of the second quarter. Campbell sank a pair of free throws with six seconds left in the first half to give Wilmington its first lead of the day, 41-39, at the break.

The Quakers opened the third quarter with an 8-1 run for its biggest lead of the afternoon, 49-40.

Marietta scored the next 16 points turning the deficit into a seven-point lead, 56-49, with 1:47 left in the third quarter. The Pioneers used a balanced attack to get back into the game as six different players scored during the run.

Wilmington slowly chipped away at the MC lead and jumped back in front, 61-60, on a layup from Campbell with 6:22 left in the game.

A Borich jumper tied the game at 64-64 and then Herd converted one of two free throws to put the Pioneers in front for good with just under five minutes remaining. Borich iced the game with two free throws in the final seconds.

For the game, Marietta shot 37.5% (27-of-72) from the floor, 33.3% (8-of-24) from three-point range and 79.2% (19-of-24) at the free throw line. The Quakers were 25-of-65 (38.5%) from the floor, 4-of-19 (21.1%) behind the arc and 19-of-25 (76.0%) at the line.

Wilmington outrebounded the Pioneers, 49-39. The Pioneers turned 23 Quaker turnovers into 33 points. MC turned the ball over 14 times.

Marietta returned home for its final two regular season games. Up next for the Pioneers is rival Muskingum University. The Muskies visit Ban Johnson Arena on Wednesday (Feb. 14) for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
