Strong Start Not Enough for Yeshiva Against St. Joseph's Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team suffered a Skyline Conference loss to St. Joseph's Brooklyn, 81-60, at the Hill Center on Thursday evening. The Maccabees fall to 2-10 in Skyline play (4-14 overall), while the Bears advance to 6-7 in conference games (8-12 overall).

Leading the way for Yeshiva was senior forward Michal Alge, who produced a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. She forced six steals, distributed three assists, and blocked one shot. Junior guard Nicole Bick had a team-high 18 points with three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Freshman guard Leah Shulmanhad seven points, while classmate Celia Cohen scored five.

The Maccabees got off to a strong start, as a successful jump shot by Cohen capped off a 7-0 run, giving Yeshiva an early 8-4 advantage. St. Joseph's Brooklyn closed out the opening period with a 15-4 run to go up 19-12 heading into the second quarter.

Less than four minutes into the stanza, Bick hit a pair of free throws to cap off the Macs' 6-0 run and pull YU to within one, at 21-20. After the Bears extended their lead to three, Alge laid the ball up and in to pull Yeshiva to within one, with 6:03 to go until the half. St. Joseph's Brooklyn built its lead back up to five. The Maccabees would not go down without a fight, as Cohen successfully converted a layup, while being fouled. She added a shot from the charity stripe to complete the traditional three-point play and narrow the Bears' lead to 27-25, with 4:28 remaining until the break. St. Joseph's would take over by going on a 14-2 run to take a commanding 41-27 advantage going into the half.

Yeshiva could not sustain a consistent run in the second half. The Bears gradually increased their lead during the game's final 20 minutes and went on to earn the Skyline win, 81-60.

For the game, sophomore guard Laura Betesh scored four points with a pair of steals. Freshman forward Lindsay Brandwein added three points with just as many rebounds, while freshman guard Chana Boltax scored three points, brought down one carom, and had an assist. Senior forward Chavi Charlap added two points with a board, while freshman forward Kaley Baker scored a point. Junior guard Penny Rabin brought down four rebounds with an assist.

For the Bears, Kelly O'Donnell led all players with 25 points, brought down eight rebounds, had four assists, and forced a pair of steals. Caitlyn Stabb produced 16 points, while Victoria Porcasi and Catherine Drago each added 11 points.

Yeshiva will host Mount Saint Mary College, in a Skyline Conference matchup on Sunday, at Riesenberg Gymnasium in Throggs Neck. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
