Cortland Women Fall at #24 Geneseo, 67-46

GENESEO, N.Y. – McKenna Brooks led four double-figure scorers with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting as nationally 24th-ranked Geneseo defeated visiting Cortland, 67-46, in women's basketball action.

Geneseo remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 12-0 record and is 17-2 overall. Cortland falls to 11-8 overall and is now in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings at 8-4, along with New Paltz and Oneonta.

Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) led Cortland with 11 points in 17 minutes off the bench. She made three 3-pointers. Shelby Dugan (Watervliet) matched her career high with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting and Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) led the Red Dragons with six rebounds.

Brooks, in addition to her 18 points, led Geneseo with eight rebounds and also dished out three assists. Lindsay Halpin finished with 15 points, six rebounds and team highs of nine assists and three steals. Kelsey Poplawski added 11 points and Natalie Alfieri added 10 points and three assists.

Geneseo shot 62 percent from the floor in the first half and 50 percent for the game. The Knights made 8-of-20 attempts from 3-point range. Cortland ended at 31 percent from the floor and 4-of-16 from the arc.

The hosts opened the game on an 11-0 run over the first six minutes, but Cortland did close to within 17-12 after the first quarter on a Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) 3-pointer. The margin was still five at 25-20 with 5:41 left in the half, but Geneseo scored the next nine points, capped by a Sara Ciotti 3-pointer, to take a 34-20 lead. Geneseo led 41-24 at halftime and 56-35 after three quarters, and the teams played to an 11-11 over the final 10 minutes.

Cortland will travel to Potsdam on Friday, Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m.
