Laux and Nestler Lead Brockport Women Past Cortland, 56-41

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Schyler Laux scored 23 points and Brockport held Cortland to 25 percent shooting from the floor as the Golden Eagles defeated the Red Dragons, 56-41, in a SUNYAC women's basketball matchup.

Laux made 7-of-14 3-pointers and also finished with three steals and four rebounds for Brockport (8-10, 6-5 SUNYAC). Emily Nestler finished with 10 points and game highs of 11 rebounds, seven assists and four blocks, and Zaria McCullough scored 10 points and dished out four assists.

Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) led Cortland (11-7, 8-3 SUNYAC) with 13 points. Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored eight points, pulled down five rebounds and blocked two shots.

Brockport shot 38 percent from the floor and 32 percent (9-of-28) from the arc, while Cortland finished 3-of-15 from long range and 14-of-56 overall.

The Golden Eagles led 8-0 five minutes into the game and never trailed. Cortland was within 14-10 after one quarter and tied the game at 14-14 on a Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) jumper with 7:36 left in the second quarter, but Laux scored the next nine points on three treys and Brockport led 23-14 with 4:27 remaining before the half.

Cortland briefly closed back to within three at 23-20 on a Taylor Miller (Freeport) 3-point play with 3:22 left, but the hosts finished the period on an 8-2 run and led 31-22 at the break.

Cortland trailed by 11 early in the third but fought back and was down by only a point at 2:31 after a Vitucci layup with 2:31 left in the stanza. Laux's 3-pointer and a Lindsay Johnson jumper pushed the lead to six, and the Golden Eagles opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run, capped by another Laux 3-pointer, and led 50-34 with 3:57 remaining.

Cortland will travel to nationally 24th-ranked Geneseo Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
